2013 Virginia Tech

College Football

Betting Preview

Schedule and Odds

Virginia Tech was supposed to be a Top 25 team last year yet they couldn't really figure things out on either side of the ball. They needed a season finale win over in-state rivals Virginia to make it to a bowl game. In the middle of their season, the Hokies lost six of eight games. The difference this year is pretty glaring as they won't have to face Clemson or Florida State which is as big of bonus you can get if you're playing in the ACC.

The offense will get most of the attention in the early going after they regressed in 2012. Logan Thomas is back for his third season as the starting QB and he has his work cut out for him. The Hokies only return two offensive linemen and lose their top three wide receivers. Not to mention their running game hasn't really gone anywhere after averaging only 3.7 yards per carry as a team last year. Thomas was actually Tech's leading rusher in 2012 which isn't a great sign. He's complemented by three RBs that had at least 60 carries last year, so there is at least experience. Plus, a new coaching staff was brought in so there is some added hope.

While Virginia Tech's defense slipped up on numerous occasions last year, it was their strong suit only allowing 23 points per game. That unit will return nine starters and should keep the Hokies in plenty of games once again. Linebacker Jack Tyler is the only returning starter at the LB spot, so he will be something to keep an eye on as well as the status of CB Antone Exum who tore his ACL in January.

2013 Virginia Tech Football Schedule

Aug. 31 vs. Alabama (Atlanta)
Sept. 7 vs. Western Carolina
Sept. 14 at East Carolina
Sept. 21 vs. Marshall
Sept. 26 at Georgia Tech
Oct. 5 vs. North Carolina
Oct. 12 vs. Pittsburgh
Oct. 26 vs. Duke
Nov. 2 at Boston College
Nov. 9 at Miami (FL)
Nov. 16 vs. Maryland
Nov. 30 at Virginia

The Coastal division is a toss-up and the Hokies are just another team to add to the mix. Because of their schedule, they automatically get tossed in the conversation even if they play as well as they did last year. They'll open their season with Alabama which will likely be a loss unless something really unexpected happens. Their next three non-conference games should go pretty smoothly with East Carolina being their only other challenge.

Three games stand out to them in conference play and those are against all of their top Coastal opponents. They'll play at Georgia Tech and against North Carolina in back-to-back games. At least one win should be expected from those two, and if not, their chances of going to the ACC title game are dashed. Later in the season the Hokies will have to travel to Miami (FL) which will be a tough one after they lost 30-12 in the same situation last year. Virginia will give them fits on the road in the last game of the year, but it is a game Tech should come away with.

If their offense can come alive, the Hokies could be looking at nine wins. But then again, if there is no improvement and they struggle once again, Va. Tech will likely reach only seven or eight regular season wins.
