2013 Wake Forest

College Football

Betting Preview

Schedule and Odds

Wake Forest continues to be a mediocre team and more of the same is the likely scenario in 2013. While they beat Florida State two years ago and North Carolina last year, the Demon Deacons have been too inconsistent to make a dent in the conference. They finished out last season with three straight losses by a combined 27-130 score. With 17 returning starters, improvement is expected with the hopes of a six-win season and a bowl game.

The offense will have most of their skill players back as well as the interior to the line. Tanner Price is back for his fourth season at the helm even though his numbers actually regressed in 2012. His favorite wideout Michael Campanaro is also returning, but the word is that Jim Grobe wants to go back to more of a rushing football team. That starts with running backs Josh Harris and Deandre Martin who combined for 1,092 yards and 11 TDs last season.

Defensively, Wake returns six seniors and eight starters overall. They have playmakers at every position and if all goes well, they'll be better than last year when they allowed just under 32 points per game. The line is stocked with ends and All-ACC performer Nikita Whitlock in the middle. Justin Jackson and Mike Olson lead the linebacking crew with experience. The secondary also brings in plenty of talent with A.J. Marshall at safety and a couple solid junior cornerbacks. The talent is there to improve and to be a viable defense in the ACC.

2013 Wake Forest Football Schedule

Aug. 29 vs. Presbyterian
Sept. 6 at Boston College
Sept. 14 vs. LA-Monroe
Sept. 21 at Army
Sept. 28 at Clemson
Oct. 5 vs. NC State
Oct. 19 vs. Maryland
Oct. 26 at Miami (FL)
Nov. 2 at Syracuse
Nov. 9 vs. Florida State
Nov. 23 vs. Duke
Nov. 30 at Vanderbilt

Wake Forest's schedule is a little easier than last season, but not by much. The only major change is that Notre Dame is no longer there. Their two important non-conference games come at home to LA-Monroe and at Army. Both games are winnable, but will be challenges. If they want to reach a bowl game, both of those need to be wins.

An early season road game at Boston College could also be very important for the Demon Deacons in the long run. They beat the Eagles by 14 points at home last year. Assuming they will lose the rest of their road games (unless they can pull an upset at Syracuse), Wake Forest will need to win at least two games at home and you can knock Florida State off that list. That leaves NC State, Maryland and Duke as three possible wins.

There is a chance that the Deacons live up to potential on both sides of the ball and they may even reach seven wins. Still, that's putting a lot of trust in a team that hasn't really deserved any as of late. Expect them to sit in that five or six win range once again.
