TRIPLE CROWN ODDS
6/7/08
With Big Brown's big Kentucky Derby and Preakness wins all eyes will be on the Belmont Stakes on June 7th to see if he can become the first Triple Crown winner in 30 years. The Triple Crown Odds after the Kentucky Derby were +125 that Big Brown would win it. Those that took that wager, feeling the Preakness was a lock, are now sitting with a nice value wager, whereas those looking to cash in now must lay odds of 1-3 that Big Brown will win the Belmont and the Triple Crown.
Every year race fans get their hopes up. Every year since 1978 they have been disappointed. Past history suggests that this is not a good wager to make. If you made this wager every year for the past 30 years, you would be 0-30. Sure, eventually, some day, there will be another Triple Crown Winner. Maybe this year.

It won't be easy though. There's a good reason it hasn't been done on 30 years. This is no sure thing. There are too many variables to overcome. 3 races in 5 weeks. The longest distance they'll ever run. Fresh challengers. But Big Brown probably has a better shot than any horse in the past 30 years, if only because of the level of competition he'll be facing. Make no mistake here folks, there's no Alydar - Affirmed duel here.
There will be plenty of good betting opportunities in the Belmont, particularly the exotics. We'll play a few of them ourselves, but regardless of our bets, we'll be rooting like crazy for Big Brown. Horse Racing desperately needs a savior. It needs a Triple Crown winner.
