MEMPHIS VS Missouri

Battle of the Tigers!

The Memphis Tigers might not be the team they were last season with Derrick Rose running the point for John Calipari, but they are still one of the best teams left in the Sweet 16 and a legit contender to repeat their performance last season in the NCAA Tournament and reach the National championship Game in Detroit.

Memphis has gotten a lot criticism for their lack of competition in Conference USA, but it seems every time they get tested they come through and prove that they are one of the best teams in the country. The Tigers might not be at the level of say the UConn Huskies or the North Carolina Tar Heels, but they are not far off and could make a legit run at the National championship like they last season if they can just get past Missouri.

Missouri has had a solid season this year, they weren’t able to win the Big 12 title this time around with Kansas and Oklahoma edging them out, but they were definitely one of the top teams in their Conference and could make some waves in the Tourney if they knock off the second seed Memphis in the Sweet 16 which I believe there is a good possibly they can do.

As of right now the Memphis Tigers are favored by -4.5 points over Missouri and that is bit too generous in my opinion. This Game will be one of the most competitive Games in the Sweet 16 as both teams are a lot more evenly matched then the spread suggests.

There really haven’t been any upsets or Cinderella stories this time around in the NCAA Tournament, but I think the Missouri have a great chance of pulling off the upset over Memphis in the Sweet 16.

The last meeting between these two teams happened way back in 2003 with Memphis barely topping the Tigers from Missouri 61-59. That was six years ago and these are two entirely different teams this time around. Memphis will put up a good fight against Missouri lead by guard Tyreke Evans who is averaging almost 17 points a Game this season for the Tigers, but I really don’t think they will be able to hang with Missouri who is coming off a convincing win over a very good Marquette team in round two.

Not only is Missouri coming off a great win over the Golden Eagles, but Memphis has struggled throughout the Tournament so far starting with barely getting a win over 15 seed Cal State Northridge in the first round.

Although the Memphis Tigers were able to come back and put the Matadors away in the first round, they were definitely out played in every which way by CSUN and should have lost that Game which was chalk full of careless mistakes.

Memphis may be favored here, but right now Missouri is playing much better basketball and should pull off the upset.
