The first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament have concluded, and we have now arrived at the Sweet Sixteen. Those teams that are alive all have hopes for a national championship, and will have to win just three more Games to claim that crown. This will be the first time we will see heavyweights collide, and there is no better example of that than the Villanova vs Duke Game.
Both teams are among the best of their conferences, the Big East and the ACC. The Blue Devils will be visiting the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 2006. Anything less than a victory would be a major disappointment for their hardcore fans. Villanova has made the Tournament for five consecutive years. This will be the third time they have advanced to at least the Sweet Sixteen in that span. They made the Elite Eight in 05-06.
The Villanova Wildcats were shell shocked when they entered the locker room at half time of their first NCAA Tournament Game. They were trailing by 10 to the lowly American Eagles. Through a combination of good defense, and help from the referees, Villanova was able to resurrect the Game and take a 80-67 victory. If they go flat early like that against Duke, it will be all over because Coach K does NOT let teams come from behind.
An entirely different Villanova team showed up to play UCLA. They took control from the get go, and continued to pile on, leading to an 89-69 win. Their defense completely neutralized Collison, and prevented UCLA from getting a clean look from the lane. They were able to force UCLA to turn the ball over 20 times. If they can play defense with the same fortitude against the Blue Devils they will probably be cruising to an easy win.
The Duke Blue Devils won easily as was expected against Binghampton in the first round. As is typical for a Duke Game, there was griping over the officiating. Binghamptons starters all had a foul before the first television timeout. Regardless of whether or not they deserved it, the refs are almost as a factor in a Blue Devils Game. I expect the officiating to continue to work to their advantage against Villanova.
Texas gave Duke a great Game. AJ Abrams had the hot hand like usual, and Pittman was great underneath the hoop, but ultimately Duke took control for a 74-69 win. Gerald Henderson was pivotal for Duke, as he put up 24 points. The Blue Devils have to do a much better job on defense, as they allowed Texas to make 50 percent of their shots. It will be a long night for Coach K if Nova is allowed to shoot that well.
Duke is currently the favorite at -2.5, and rightfully so. Henderson, Singler, and SCheyer are going to give Villanova everything they want. I envision a high scoring event with Duke coming out on top. Villanova is a classy team, but I dont think they can match up with Duke. Take Duke at -2.5 and we lean towards the over 148 as well..
