Texas A&M-Kansas

CBB Pick with Analysis

3/2/11

The 24th-ranked Texas A&M Aggies (22-6, 9-5 Big 12) will look to rebound from a 58-51 loss at Baylor that snapped their five-Game winning streak when they visit the second-ranked Kansas Jayhawks (27-2, 12-2) on Wednesday.  The Jayhawks can also clinch at least a share of the Big 12 regular-season title in their home finale by winning for the 10th time in 11 Games after #7 Texas lost at home to Kansas State on Monday.

Kansas is coming off an 82-70 victory at Oklahoma on Saturday, the team’s third straight win overall.  The Jayhawks failed to cover the spread for just the second time in nine Games but saw the total go OVER for the ninth time in their past 10.  Marcus and Markieff Morris led the way against the Sooners, as the twins combined for 42 points and 19 rebounds.

Sophomore point guard Elijah Johnson injured his head in the win while filling for suspended junior Tyshawn Taylor, missing the last 14 minutes of the Game as a precautionary measure.  Johnson reportedly could have returned and figures to get a lot of work in the final two Games of the season, starting with this Game against the Aggies.

Kansas beat Texas A&M 79-66 in the semifinals of last year’s Big 12 Conference Tournament and will now try to hand the Aggies a second straight loss.  Texas A&M had won five in a row after suffering consecutive home losses to Texas and Baylor as part of a bigger three-Game losing streak, the team’s longest of the season.

The Aggies are 5-3 on the road this season, but one of those losses came against the Bears on Saturday.  They were held to their third-lowest point total of the season by Baylor and saw the total go UNDER in their second straight Game.  David Loubeau scored a team-high 14 points in 22 minutes of action while Khris Middleton was the only other Texas A&M player to finish in double figures with 12.  Middleton also grabbed 10 rebounds but did not shoot well, making only 4 of 16 from the field.

The Jayhawks will be tough to beat at home, where they have won five in a row both straight-up and against the spread since seeing their 69-Game winning streak at Phog Allen Fieldhouse come to an end with a 74-63 loss to Texas on January 22.  The Aggies have won three of Four on the road but none of those wins came against a team with a winning record in the Big 12.
