Hawaii at LA Tech Betting Line and Prediction

9/30/09

The Hawaii Warriors take off for the Mainland for the 3rd consecutive week to take on LA Tech this week. Hawaii is 1 point away from a perfect 3-0 season while LA Tech was over matched against Auburn and Navy but managed a win against Nicholls State in their last Game. Both of these squads had last week off. Currently, LA Tech is a -3.5 point home favorite over Hawaii at 5dimes.com, with no total posted as of this writing.

The Hawaii Warriors started off a perfect 2-0 with wins over Central Arkansas and Washington State. After that they lost to the UNLV Rebels by a score of 34-33. QB Greg Alexander did his job well completing 31 of 48 passes for a career high of 477 yards and a 3 TDs. A lone INT was the only blemish on his day. The running Game was non-existent for the Warriors, and the defense GAve up 460 total yards. They also allowed UNLV to convert 2-2 on 4th down. WR Rodney Bradley played a great Game, catching 8 passes for 189 yards and a TD. Keoloha Pilares also did well at WR picking up 146 yards.

It’s obvious that Hawaii can put big points on the board. The passing Game is prolific behind QB Greg Alexander. He has a stable of WRs, and more than one guy can make a big play for him. On the flip side, they have little to no rush offense. I’d like to see them change it up with a few more run plays to keep the opposing defense off balaNCe. The Warriors defense has to do a better job of stopping big plays and not giving up big points in the second half. This will be even more pivotal against Louisiana Tech.

The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs opened the year with two tough Games on the road. They lost both of those Games, against Auburn and Navy. They were simply out classed. An easy win 48-13 against Nicholls State probably did the job of getting their confideNCe back up. QB Ross Jenkins was 21/30 for 357 yards and 2 TDs in that win. D.J. Morrow did well at RB picking up a TD and 89 yards. He had a long run of 47 yards. Tyrone Duplessis also added to the running attack with a 43-yard run and 71 yards of total rushing. The defense did a good job on the whole, holding Nicholls State to 3 points until the 4th quarter.

Louisiana Tech has a balanced offensive attack. They can hurt you through the sky, or by keeping it on the ground. QB Ross Jenkins has no problems airing the ball out. The defense has been relatively strong thus far, and will need to play a good Game against the very good offense of Hawaii. Louisiana Tech has to avoid getting off to a fast start and completely collapsing like they did after going up 14-0 against Navy in week 2. If they can put Hawaii away early they will have a hard time losing this one.

LA Tech has lost 3 straight to Hawaii and is 1-6 against them overall. If they are going to break through against the Warriors, this would appear to be their best chance. They catch Hawaii having to travel for their 3rd consecutive Game. True, they had last week off, but all of those trips east can take their toll. In 2007 this was a 45-44 shoot out with Hawaii on top. Last year Hawaii held the upper hand. But this year LA Tech is loaded with returning starters from a year ago and this will be the Seniors only chance to beat Hawaii in their careers. The road trip for Hawaii, the added motivation of not having beat Hawaii, and the desperation of having started the year 1-2 all favor LA Tech to come out fired up to pick up a win here. We’ll lay the number. LA Tech -3.5
