LSU at Georgia Current Betting Line and Prediction

10/3/09

LSU travels to Georgia this week to take on the Bulldogs in a huge SEC affair. Both teams are 2-0 in Conference while Georgia is 3-1 on the year and LSU remains undefeated at 4-0. The Current line on this Game at Bet 5dimes.com is Georgia -3.5 with a Total of 50.5. The opening line was Georgia -2.5, so the early money has been on the Bulldogs.

Not many teams have started their season off with a more difficult Schedule then Georgia has. They opened the season on the road in Stillwater, Oklahoma against Oklahoma State. They were not able to get the win in their opener, but since that Game Coach Mark Richt has gotten his Georgia Bulldogs back on the right track. They were able to squeak out victories in shootouts over South Carolina and Arkansas then last weekend they beat Arizona State on a last second field goal. To say this Georgia team has been battle tested would be an understatement.

Just about everyone assumes that Florida will be the Eastern team represented in the SEC title Game, but Coach Mark Richt and his Georgia Bulldogs have other plans. The #4 ranked LSU Tigers come into this Game 4-0, but this Saturday will be their toughest test yet. They are undefeated with wins over Washington, Vanderbilt, Louisiana-LAfayette, and Mississippi State. In their last Game against Mississippi State the Bulldogs had a 1st and goal on the two yard line to win the Game and the LSU defense was able to stop QB Tyson Lee on the goal line on 4th down to preserve a 30-26 victory. It was great to see LSU’s defense finally step up in a big situation, but LSU did not look like the #4 ranked team in the country. LSU has plenty of doubters coNCerning them being a top team, but a win over the Georgia Bulldogs will help silent their naysayers.

GEORGIA’S KEY TO VICTORY

We all know Georgia’s offense can put up points and in a hurry when they are on, but we have also seen Georgia’s offense have problems moving the ball when they have trouble finding their rhythm. The question is which Georgia offense is going to show up? against Arizona State they had 334 total yards with 242 passing yards and only 92 yards rushing. Georgia has got to be more balanced on offense to keep this LSU defense honest otherwise they are going drop more back into coverage and make it very difficult on Joe Cox to find open receivers. LSU’s defense has struggled this year compared to what we’d expect from an LSU defense. LSU is ranked 9th in the SEC for total defense so Georgia should have their fair share of opportunities to make plays.

LSU’S KEY TO VICTORY

When I think about LSU the first word that comes to mind is DEFENSE. LSU has always been known for having a big strong defense that was always the strength of their team, but that has not been the case so far this season. LSU is ranked 9th in the SEC in total defense. That is not good news for LSU since they are going up against a Georgia team that is capable of putting up big yards. If LSU is going to win this Game this defense has got to step up and play like a LSU defense is suppose to. The good news for LSU is you know they have the talent on the defensive side of the ball to get the job done, and they have one of the best defensive coordinators in the country in John Chavis, so it’s only a matter of time before this defense figures out Chavis’ scheme and gets things straightened out.

THE FINAL VERDICT

Neither of these teams has really done anything to impress, up to this point. There are plenty of weaknesses on both squads. LSU had trouble with Washington and Vandy and was lucky to get away with a win last week against Miss St. Georgia dropped their first Game and has been getting by, barely, each of the last 3 weeks. The last 3 times they two teams played, it hasn’t been close. Georgia won all 3 Games, 45-15, 34-14 and then last year a 58-32 loss at home for LSU snapping a streak of 30 consecutive Saturday home wins for LSU.

In a Game where we see plenty of weaknesses on both sides of the ball, we’re iNClined to take the points. +3.5 in a big SEC Game like this one could prove to be huge. LSU +3.5
