Boston College Football Betting Preview Predictions and Schedule 2011

Boston College was 7-6 last season going to a bowl Game and finishing with a top 20 defense but their record and stats can only be described as misleading. It’s always important to take a look at how those stats and records were achieved. In fact, had Boston College not opened up with wins over Weber State and Kent State they would have been on the outside looking in as far as the bowl picture was coNCerned.

After those opening two wins over cup cakes, BC proceeded to lose 5 straight, 3 of which were not even close. They lost 19-0 to Virginia Tech, 31-13 to Notre Dame, 44-17 to NC State and then two close losses to Florida State 24-19 and Maryland 24-21. BC then rattled off 5 straight wins but those wins were all by a hair and they came against Clemson, Wake Forest, Duke, Virginia and Syracuse. All of those teams had losing records with the exception of Syracuse who could hardly be called the beast of the East.

On the bright side, BC improved against good teams as the season progressed. After getting blown out by Notre Dame and NC State, the highlight of their season had to be to close losses against FSU and Maryland, two winning teams. But there wasn’t enough of a GAp in the wins against bad teams to indicate anything big on the horizon. Those close wins over bad teams could easily become losses.

The Schedule works against BC this year. It’s questionable how they’ll fair against the first half of their Schedule which has them playing Northwestern, UCF, Duke, UMASS and Wake Forest. The only win I’d peNCil in there is the UMASS Game. Working in their favor is that all of those Game with the exception of UCF are at home. Starting October 8th, their Schedule can only be described as brutal the rest of the way. They play at Clemson who will be looking for revenge and have road Games at Virginia Tech, Maryland, Notre Dame and Miami Florida. Their two home Games the 2nd half of the season are back to back against Florida State and NC State.

Boston College really needs to come out and win their first 5 Games or go 4-1 at worst. It’s not out of the question with 4 of the 5 at home. But anything less than 4 wins in that stretch and this team is in big trouble. With 4 wins early, BC could pull a couple of upsets later in the year and make a minor bowl Game appearaNCe, possibly equaling their 2010 win total of 7. They return a good number of players at key positions on both sides of the ball and the defense should keep them close, but we don’t see more than 6 wins on the BC daNCe card this year.
