Clemson
vs.
Virginia Tech
ACC Championship
12/3/11
Clemson and Virginia Tech square off in the ACC Title Game Saturday Night in another title Game which is a rematch of a regular season Game. In that regular season Game, Clemson handed the Hokies their only defeat of the season, a 23-3 setback. This time around Virginia Tech is favored by 7 with a total of 52.5.
This would appear to be two teams headed in opposite directions. since their loss to Clemson back on October 1st, Virginia Tech has rattled off 7 straight wins while Clemson has now lost 3 of their last 4 Games, all lopsided losses with their only win coming against Wake Forest 31-28. It’s rare to see a team fall apart the way Clemson has and still end up with a chance to win a Conference title. The winner of this Game is not only the ACC Champ, but also gets a birth in the Orange Bowl.
Our model likes Virginia Tech by a score of 29-21 and looking at the yards per point numbers for these two teams, season to date, Clemson looks like an average team with mediocre numbers while Tech looks like a very good team, particularly on defense with a ypp number of 18, which is fitting when you consider that Virginia Tech is ranked 10th in the nation in points allowed at 17 points per Game.
We aren’t crazy about laying a TD here, but for us, if we were to play this Game, it would have to be Virginia Tech or pass here. again, two teams headed in different directions, a chance for a very good football team, Virginia Tech, to erase the only blemish on their 2011 record with a rare same season revenge Game, and a chance for Tech QB LoGAn Thomas to make up for what was his worst Game of the year. Also note the Clemson offensive line is hurting and GAve up a season high 5 sacks last week, while Virginia Tech was busy shutting out and blowing out Virginia. Virginia Tech -7
