11/10/11

Georgia Tech hosts Virginia Tech in a huge ACC Coastal Division match up on Thursday night. Virginia Tech is 4-1 in Conference play and 8-1 overall while Georgia Tech is 4-2 in Conference and 7-2 overall. As you might expect, this Game is a toss up as far as the betting line goes with some books favoring Virginia Tech by 1 and others favoring Georgia Tech by one, with a few pk’s thrown in as well. Note that the winner of this Game has gone on to the ACC title Game in each of the last 6 years.

Often times the oddsmakers get it right. This may be such a case. There are several ways to come up with a number on a Game. Some of the methods we like to use weigh in on one side of this Game while other methods weigh in on the other. When that’s the case, we generally simply stay away from a Game like this, however, we owe to to Our readers to at least offer an opinion on such a huge Game.

Neither of these teams has played a tough Schedule, and when they have, they haven’t exactly passed with flying colors. Virginia tech built their record with wins over the likes of App State, East Carolina, Arkansas State, Marshall, Wake Forest, BC and Duke. They had two chances against the upper class, both at home, failing big time in a 23-3 loss to Clemson and then redeeming themselves with a 38-35 win over Miami Florida.

Georgia Tech started out the year blasting weak opposition but came back down to earth oNCe they started meeting decent opponents and from that point on, their results have been mediocre and iNClude back to back losses to Virginia and Miami Florida. To their credit they knocked off Clemson 31-17 in their last Game. Both of these teams had last week off.

Two of the best coaches in college football square off here with Fran Beamer and Paul Johnson. Take note of the fact that Beamer and staff have had an extra week to prepare for the Georgia Tech option. Extra prep time is a big plus for any coach and team but means even more in a week where you’re preparing for an opponent that runs an offense you aren’t used to seeing every week.

If this Game were to be played at Virginia Tech, it would be a no brainer. They have one of the best home field advantages in college ball. On the flip side, Georgia Tech, historically, nothing to write home about, at home however they are 20-4 at home under Paul Johnson and they did beat Clemson there last time out. Meanwhile, Virginia Tech hasn’t had to face a top quality opponent on the road yet this year. Georgia Tech +1
