The ACC gets the college football spotlight on Monday night as Virginia Tech hosts Georgia Tech in a prime time affair which can be seen on ESPN at 8 pm est. If you like Virginia Tech, the best prices are at Betonline and SBG Global where you can lay -7. If you like the underdog, Georgia Tech is +7.5 at 5 Dimes with some extra juice. Though check on Game day when 5 Dimes posts their reduced juice lines and you can likely do better. The total is 49 and Virginia Tech is getting most of the early action, as much as 75% at one book.
You can generally always count on the Frank Beamer led Hokies to win 10 or 11 Games year in and year out. The number of returning starters rarely seems to matter at Virginia Tech. For the record though, they have just 3 returning to the offense, but have 9 returning to a defense that was one of the best in the land a year ago.
Georgia Tech returns 7 to the offense and 6 to the defense. Last year they were 8-5 and lost in the Sun Bowl to Utah, 30-27. Paul Johnson enters his 5th year on the sidelines and there’s no question that the former Navy coach has put his stamp on the Yellow Jackets as they continue to frustrate ACC defenses with their option offense.
If you’re looking at the Georgia Tech side, you have to be coNCerned with their defense. They GAve up 30+ points in 4 straight Games to end the year last season and one of those Games was against Duke. They may catch a break in that Virginia Tech’s offense is young, but this defense had trouble stopping most teams a year ago. When you take into ACCount the potential defensive problems, and then factor in the fact that Beamer’s talented and loaded veteran defense has had the entire off season to focus on this Game and stopping the Yellow Jacket option, you might come to the coNClusion that Georgia Tech is up against it Monday night.
We don’t have a strong opinion on this Game. We are going to buck the public here and lean towards the Georgia Tech side though. These are two extremely well coached teams with extra time to prepare. We think the inexperieNCe of the Virginia Tech offense could play into Georgia Tech’s hands here while the Yellow Jackets should be able to move the ball on the ground against the Hokies as they have the last two Game against them. Last year Georgia Tech led in the 3rd quarter 26-21 with Virginia Tech scoring 16 straight to put the Game late.
Paul Johnson was known for covering road Games while at Navy. He’s kept that Tradition alive at Georgia Tech with a 7-4 ATS record as a road underdog and this looks like a spot where he could add to that mark. We’ll call for Georgia Tech to get their double revenge here after having dropped the last 2 to the Hokies. This one stays close. OUtright Yellow Jacket win not out of the question. Georgia Tech +7.5 at 5 Dimes.
