Schedule and Odds

Army didn’t have enough pieces last year to pull out wins. They were often handled in the Fourth quarter which led to a good portion of their losses. Not to mention, they only scored three points in a loss to Stony Brook. While their Schedule remains tough this season, they’ll need to show some consistency.

Four-year starting quarterback Trent Steelman is gone which doesn’t exactly make things easy for the Black Knights. Steelman led Army (best rushing team in the nation two straight years) in every rushing category including his 17 touchdowns. Interesting enough, he threw for less touchdown passes than A.J. SChurr who is set to be this year’s starter. SChurr can run, but he will bring more of a passing Game to Army which was really non-existent with Steelman. Raymond Maples and LArry Dixon (combined 363 carries) are also returning in the backfield, so it’s not like the running Game is going to disappear. Terry Baggett also provides ability although he’s had injury issues his first two seasons. The receiving Game is led by Chevaughn LAwrence, but that’s not saying much since he only had 21 receptions and zero touchdowns last year.

Army’s defense is in a tougher spot as they didn’t do many good things a season ago. Geoff Bacon was fifth in the nation with 136 tackles as a middle linebacker, but he was moved to the safety spot in spring which is something to keep an eye on. The current list of projected starters only has one senior. With another difficult Schedule, the defense will have to improve.

2013 Army Football Schedule

Aug. 30 vs. Morgan State
Sept. 7 at Ball State
Sept. 14 vs. Stanford
Sept. 21 vs. Wake Forest
Sept. 28 vs. Louisiana Tech (Dallas)
Oct. 5 at Boston College
Oct. 12 vs. Eastern Michigan
Oct. 19 at Temple
Nov. 2 at Air Force
Nov. 9 vs. Western Kentucky
Dec. 1 at Hawaii
Dec. 14 vs. Navy (Philadelphia)

LUckily for the Black Knights, they get to open the season with Morgan State. Hopefully they don’t pull another Stony Brook and lose that Game because two much harder opponents are next in Ball State and Stanford.

Army has a lot of winnable Games on their Schedule, but that doesn’t mean they will happen. Wake Forest and Boston College are weaker ACC teams, while Louisiana Tech is in rebuild mode and Eastern Michigan is set to be another bad team. Although this doesn’t mean much as the Eagles beat Army last year by 10 points.

LAter in the season, Army’s Schedule gets interesting with only two November Games as they get a three-week break before playing at Hawaii and then two weeks after that before their Game with Navy.

There are Games in the Schedule which could mean Four or five wins, but that could be asking for too much from these guys. With a new QB and subpar defense, the Black Knights may have trouble getting to three wins again.
