Pick-Analysis

9/14/13

The UCONN Huskies will host their former coach, Randy Edsall, on Saturday Night in a Game that will kick off at 730pm est. Maryland opened as a -8 point favorite at 5 Dimes Sportsbook and the current line is Maryland -7. Now that line moved in UCONN’s favor despite the fact that the betting trends at the worlds largest sportsbook, 5dimes.com, show that 74% of the early wagers taken on the Game have come in on Maryland. (Incidentally, you can view these betting trends, which can be a very powerful betting tool, just by signing up for an account at 5dimes.com.)

For those that don’t remember, UCONN and it’s fans were not happy with Randy Edsall. He took the Maryland job and literally left town in the middle of the night without so much as a good bye. Kind of a classless move and one the fans and players haven’t forgotten. UCONN got their revenge by beating Edsall and the Terrapins last season in Maryland, but this is the first time Edsall has returned to UCONN since he left.

Regardless of the outcome of this Game, this line is a clear example of the publics perception of these teams based on what they have done thus far, without really taking much more into account than the final scores of the Games they played. In the case of Maryland, they blew out Florida International and Old Dominion. UCONN meanwhile, lost to Towson State, 33-18. Now, maybe UCONN took Towson lightly, but they shouldn’t have. Towson hung with #3 LSU last season.

Or, maybe UCONN really is that bad. That’s for the handicapper to figure out. Neither team was very good a year ago. Maryland was 4-8 while UCONN was 5-7. Both return 5 to their defense while UCONN returns 8 to the offense to Maryland’s 7. So, not all that much has changed in the makeup of these two teams. The same teams that played a 24-21 Game a year ago where they each had a tad over 200 yards and where UCONN outrushed Maryland and had 3.8 yards per rush to the Terrapins 2.4.

We think there’s some added value here on the UCONN side as a result of the results of Maryland’s two wins against cupcakes and UCONN’s loss to Towson. We’d expect a much better effort from what should be a fired up UCONN team this week. Fired up to beat their old coach and fired up to make up for their opening week flop. We’ll grab the points here. UCONN +7
