It was already going to be a tough process for Massachusetts as they made the daunting task of moving to FBS and the MAC in 2012. They weren’t exactly a dominant team before and that showed up when they only won one Game last year. includedin the process is new head coach Charley Molnar who entered the picture last season. This team is still in rebuild mode and not much should be expected from them once again.
The Minutemen scored a depressing 12.7 points per Game in 2012 while giving up over 40. They only return Four starters to the offensive side which is probably a good thing. For 2013, they brought in OC John Bond who recently helped transition Georgia State to FBS play. Mike Wegzyn returns at quarterback as only a sophomore. He should be able to improve in a second season, but his spot still isn’t locked in after finishing with six TDs and 10 INTs last year. The top wide receiver returning had 20 receptions last year, but tight end Rob Blanchflower is also back who had 43 grabs. The running Game has a new starter in Jordan Broadnax who ran for 2.7 yards per carry last year on 51 carries. The line is even a bigger problem with only one starter returning and three of the newcomers are underclassmen.
Defensively, UMass has a bit of hope with seven returnees. Their secondary is young with three sophomores, but they also all started last year if that means anything. Due to a good recruiting class, the defense has some hope, especially at linebacker. They couldn’t stop much last year and were absolutely brutal against the run. With three seniors on the line, hopefully they’ll be able to pick that up.

The goal for Massachusetts will be to rack up a few more wins. They get to play old Conference foe Maine of the CAA in their second Game. That one needs to be a win, if not, their confidence will likely be completely shot.
Their best chances for wins will come against Miami (OH), Western Michigan and Akron with all of them being at home. A road Game at Central Michigan could be in the cards too, but they lost to the Chips by 21 points at home last year. The Game against the Broncos also looks a bit hard after losing 52-14 last year. That said, about Four wins will probably be the cut off for the Minutemen.
Offensively, they will still struggle immensely, although there is some hope on the defensive end. Three wins is probably where they’ll end up, if all goes well.
