College Football Pick
At this point, Florida State is just playing for a better bowl Game, and maybe its only motivation to finish the season strong will be to gain momentum before facing the in-state rival Gators. Boston College is just looking to string together a few wins in ACC play, but that looks unlikely at this point.
The only way Boston College competed the last few years was through a defense that kept them around. Now, without that defense, the Eagles have struggled through Conference play, getting blown out and losing to teams like Syracuse.
When these team met a year ago, it was the Boston College defense that kept this Game from being a blowout. The Seminoles won just 14-0 and could never get anything going. The problem for BC is that it still has no offense even with a new quarterback, scoring less than 25 points per Game. It’s been a monumental task for this team to Scoremore than 20 points in ACC play this season.
The only chance they have is if Florida State comes out unenthused, but playing in a Friday night Game, that seems unlikely.
As usual, the ‘Noles will bank on Dalvin Cook to do his thing. After struggling early in the year, Cook has really come on in the last month-plus. He was actually held to 54 yards in the last meeting, but it’s hard to see that happening again with how he’s been running. since going for 267 yards at USF a couple months ago, Cook has been the focal point of this offense with FSU rarely asking freshman QB Deondre Francois to do much. Francois has been fine, but the Seminoles would rather run through Cook for offense. Francois has passed for just Four touchdowns in the last Four Games.
Defensively, the Seminoles have been a mess this season and most of the reason they haven’t been good overall. Stud safety Derwin James still hasn’t returned and may not return again this year. But it may not matter how good the defense is if BC can’t score.
Led by former Kentucky QB Patrick Towles, the Eagles remain a bad offense. Towles is completing less than 50% of his passes and hasn’t really had a good Game yet this season. In a home Game against a mediocre Syracuse team, he went just 4-of-14 for 45 yards as the Eagles tried to run as much as possible. Running back Jon Hilliman will continue to get his touches, but averaging 3.5 yards per carry isn’t going to do many things or help keep this team around. If the Eagles want a shot at covering, it’s going to depend on what Towles can do.
And maybe at this point in the season, Florida State will ask Francois to do a little more, to advance his Game a little bit. The Eagles still have a solid defense, despite being at lesser levels than previous versions, so it’ll be a good test to see what this FSU offense can do ahead of the Florida Game to close the season.
Our Pick – FSU has won the last 6 in this series but 4 of the last 6 would have been covers for BC getting +21. Florida State only has one win this season by 21+ points and that came against Charleston Southern. This will likely be #2. Florida State -21
