When two programs in transition meet in early September, chaos often ensues. That’s exactly what we’re expecting when Temple visits UMass to kick off the 2025 college football season, as both teams enter the campaign with new head coaches, reconstructed rosters, and plenty of question marks.
Temple’s Rebuild Under KC Keeler
The Owls couldn’t have had a worse 2024 season, finishing dead last in the AAC with a dismal 3-9 overall record and 2-6 conference mark. The program hit rock bottom, prompting the hiring of KC Keeler, who previously guided Sam Houston State through its successful FCS-to-FBS transition.
Keeler inherits a roster that’s been gutted and rebuilt through the transfer portal. With only five offensive starters and two defensive starters returning, this is essentially a brand-new team learning a brand-new system. The Owls hit the transfer portal aggressively, bringing in “tons of new faces” who will need time to mesh with Keeler’s schemes on both sides of the ball.
While Keeler’s track record suggests he can eventually turn things around, year one figures to be a work in progress. New offensive and defensive coordinators typically need several games to establish rhythm and timing with their personnel, especially when that personnel is largely unfamiliar with each other.
UMass’s Double Transition
The Minutemen face their own set of challenges under new head coach Joe Harasymiak, the former Rutgers defensive coordinator. Not only is UMass breaking in a new coaching staff, but they’re also transitioning from independence to the MAC Conference, adding another layer of adjustment.
Like Temple, UMass has undergone significant roster turnover, particularly at the skill positions where they also have new faces. The combination of a new coach, new conference, and new players creates a perfect storm of uncertainty heading into the season opener.
Harasymiak’s defensive background could eventually help stabilize the Minutemen, but installing new systems on both sides of the ball while integrating transfer portal additions is a tall task for any coaching staff, especially in their first game together.
Why the Total is the Play
With Temple favored by just 1.5 points, the betting market recognizes this as essentially a pick-em game between two programs in flux. Rather than trying to pick a side here, the total seems like the way to go.
Early season games featuring new coaching staffs and significant roster turnover historically trend toward lower-scoring affairs. Here’s why:
Offensive Growing Pains: Both teams will be implementing new offensive systems with players who lack familiarity with the schemes and each other. Expect timing issues, communication breakdowns, and conservative play-calling as coaches prioritize execution over explosive plays.
Defensive Advantages: While both defenses will also be learning new systems, defense typically translates faster than offense in early season games. New defensive coordinators can rely on effort and fundamentals while offensive timing develops.
First Game Jitters: Season openers naturally feature more mistakes, penalties, and conservative game management. Add coaching changes and roster turnover, and these factors become magnified.
Conference Adjustment: UMass is not only dealing with internal changes but also preparing for MAC competition, potentially leading to more conservative preparation and game-planning.
The Betting Recommendation
All roads point to a sloppy, mistake-filled game as both programs work through their growing pains. With new coaches installing new systems and largely new rosters trying to find their identity, expect plenty of three-and-outs, turnovers, and conservative play-calling.
The oddsmakers have set the total at 52 points, likely anticipating some of these factors. However, we believe they haven’t fully accounted for the magnitude of change both programs are experiencing.
Our Play: UNDER 52 Points
This game has all the ingredients for a low-scoring affair as two rebuilding programs with new coaching staffs work out the inevitable kinks that come with wholesale changes. While both teams may improve significantly as the season progresses, their season opener figures to be a grind-it-out affair that stays well below the posted total.
