Finally, tonight, the Winter Games. Count me among those who don’t like them and won’t watch them … Because they’re so trying, maybe over the next three weeks we should all try too. Like, try not to be incredulous when someone attempts to link these Games to those of the ancient Greeks who never heard of skating or skiing. So try not to laugh when someone says these are the world’s greatest athletes, despite a paucity of blacks that makes the Winter Games look like a GOP convention. Try not to point out that something’s not really a sport if a pseudo-athlete waits in what’s called a kiss-and-cry area, while some panel of subjective judges decides who won … So if only to hasten the arrival of the day they’re done, when we can move on to March Madness for God’s sake, let the Games begin.”

So there you have it.

It’s time we hold Bryant Gumbel accountable for his remarks. It simply should not be tolerated. Jimmy the Greek was fired for some dumb racial remarks, and rightly so. Rush Limbaugh was run off the air on ESPN for suggesting that black quarterbacks were not as good as white QB’s, and once again, rightly so. There are many more examples like those above, and in all of these cases, the person making the remarks paid the price for doing so.

So why should we allow Bryant Gumbel to get up on his personal soap box on HBO and spew his obvious racist remarks?

“So try not to laugh when someone says these are the world’s greatest athletes, despite a paucity of blacks that makes the Winter Games look like a GOP convention”

I can’t call Shaun White, the Olympic snowboard Gold Medal champion the best in the world because there is a shortage of black snowboarders??

How insulting to the hundreds of world class Olympic athletes, not to mention those that didn’t make the cut, to have Bryant Gumbel pass judgment on their chosen sports. Sports they have dedicated their lives to. Sports they spend countless hours practicing to perfection so that they can compete on the world stage and attempt to become the best in the world.

Perhaps even more disturbing is that Mr Gumbels comments came at the end of a Real Sports episode in which former Olympic Gold Medallist Bill Johnson was profiled. (Bill Johnson became permanently disabled as a result of a skiing accident).

Tell Bill Johnson he wasn’t the best in the world……

It’s a shame the world can’t hold an event like the winter Olympics without bags of hot air like Bryant Gumbel having to insert their own agendas.

Any athlete that is ever approached to do a story for Real Sports on HBO should boycott the show and the story until Bryant Gumbel is fired.

Anyone who shells out money for a subscription to HBO should cancel their subscriptions until Bryant Gumbel is fired.

Bryant Gumbel should be fired. If Bryant Gumbel wants to be taken serious as a “journalist”, then he should be held to the same standards as others. The racist remarks were wrong when Jimmy the Greek and Rush Limbaugh (among others) made them, and they are wrong when Bryant Gumbel makes them. No different. Being black does not give one a “free pass” on racist remarks.

As  a long time subscriber to HBO and one who loves all of their sports programming, they can count me among those who will be canceling their subscriptions until Gumbel is no longer with the network.

If Gumbels comments offended you, hopefully you’ll do the same. No better way to send a message than to simply not watch.

Good Bye HBO and good bye Bryant Gumbel……..
