Post Odds on Winter Olympics

For Immediate Release

February 8, 2006

With less than a week to go before the opening ceremonies for the Torino Winter Olympics, the Sportsbook is offering odds on a number of events, including opportunities to wager on which country will walk away with the most gold medals. The United States is a top contender at 11/5 odds.

Among the top American contenders is alpine skier Bode Miller, who’s known as much for his outrageous behavior off the slopes as for his prowess on the powder. Miller is a contender in five events and will likely go off as the favorite in each.

In figure skating, world championship bronze-medalist Evan Lysacek is expected to attempt th e quad toe-triple, toe-double loop in the men’s
free skate, a combination that – if landed – would be worth 14.5 base value points in the new scoring system. If successful, the Illinois-born Lysacek would likely win gold. One of his contenders will be countryman Johnny Weir, the three-time and reigning U.S. champion. On the ladies’ side, Michelle Kwan returns for her third Olympic Games (Fourth, counting Lillehammer where she served as an alternate).

Of course, one of the highlights of the Winter Olympics will be the men’s ice hockey Tournament, featuring National Hockey League stars. Defending champion Canada is favored by the bookmakers at 11/10 odds. As for the other top contenders: Czech Republic is at 5/2 odds; Sweden at 4/1 odds; USA at 9/2 odds; and Russia at 5/1 odds.
