Celtics vs. Mavs

2/12/09

The Boston Celtics have had a rough couple of weeks lately with the devastating loss to their arch rival Los Angeles Lakers and then losing again to the second best team in the West in the San Antonio Spurs. They did beat the New York Knicks by 10 points in between these two Games, but what good team hasn’t beaten the Knicks by 10 this season.

As if the loss at home to the Lakers weren’t bad enough, the Celtics go and drop another home Game to the Spurs. It just hasn’t been a good start to the month of February for Boston.

Even though the Celtics dropped two statement Games recently, a team like Boston doesn’t stay down for long and will get back to form sooner rather than later. The same thing happened to Kevin Garnett and company when they lost the Christmas day rematch with the Lakers, they struggled for a little bit then started dominating again in classic Celtics fashion.

The Dallas Mavericks on the other hand are in trouble and may be on the verge of moving some of their star players by the NBA trade deadline on February 19th which is right around the corner. Dirk Nowitzki has played great as usual, but his supporting cast just can’t get it done anymore as they are just not good enough to compete with the best in the NBA.

The Mavs suffered a huge blow recently when the front runner for the Sixth Man of the Year award, Jason Terry, went down with an injury to his left hand that will keep him out for quite some time. Terry has been arguably the second best player on the team this season just behind Nowitzki. Jason Kidd has played well at times, but it is becoming more and more obvious that he is on the downside of his hall of fame career as he is only averaging just over eight points a Game.

Unlike the Celtics the Mavs have played surprisingly well over the past five Games with wins over the Orlando Magic and Portland Trailblazers. They did lose to the Utah Jazz, but then quickly rebounded with two wins over the Chicago Bulls and the Sacramento Kings, but those wins aren’t really saying much.

The Celtics will be without a doubt favored in this Game, especially with Jason Terry watching from the sidelines and trade rumors flying around involving Josh Howard. The only way I really see the Mavs having a chance at winning this match up is if Dirk Nowitzki has a big scoring night and Jason Kidd contains Rajon Rondo by limiting his penetration which there is a good chance that he will.

The Mavs are a good team that will be a middle of the pack playoff team, but the Boston Celtics are a great team that will be contending for an NBA title and will be looking to get back on track at the expense of the Dallas Mavericks.

Dallas may get lucky and make this Game close, but if the Celtics defense clamps down, the Mavs stand absolutely no chance of pulling off the upset.
