Betting Line Favors Vikings by 3 over Chiefs

Favre to Play Sparingly

8/21/09

The Vikings and Chiefs tangle in a preseason affair tonight with Brett Favre possibly playing a series or two. The betting line favors the Vikings by a field goal with the total 37.

Tarvaris Jackson was just thirteen years old when Brett Favre won the Super Bowl 13 years ago. Now at the age of 26 Jackson will be riding pine so the ageless and indecisive veteran can make one more shot at the glory. Favre will see action for the Minnesota Vikings despite missing all of training camp. On the other side of the ball Matt Cassel will be under the helm for his second Game as a Kansas City Chief. This Game promises to be an exciting one.

Many people will be watching and betting this Game simply because of Brett Favre; however that may not be a good idea. Reports say he will play only one or two series in this Game. Favre has a reputation as a big risk taker, and coach Childress is quite the opposite. It will be interesting to see how they mesh. Favre is a coachable player, and knows this offense. He is surrounded by an excellent supporting cast and should have much success this year with the Vikings.

The Minnesota Vikings dominated the Indianapolis Colts in every way during their first preseason Game. They racked up 198 yards on the ground and another 153 in the air while getting 24 first downs and 13 total points. The Vikings also dominated the time of possession. The defense was on lockdown allowing only 142 yards, 8 first downs, and 3 points. Perhaps the worst aspect of that Game for Minnesota was the 9 penalties for 62 yards.

The Kansas City Chiefs played poorly in defeat against the Houston Texans. Matt Cassel looked a bit rusty in the little action that he saw, losing a fumble and completing 2 of 5 passes. Dwayne Boye looked great at WR pulling down 5 catches for a total of 70 yards. The running Game was lackluster picking up 115 yards and giving up a fumble. The Chiefs had a total of three turnovers in that event. I’d like to see them improve in efficieNCy during this Game. They need to make fewer mistakes.

The Vikings have a relatively short injury list. Ray Edwards (DE) is out with a knee injury. Pat Williams (DT) is questionable due to shoulder trouble. Bernard Berrian (WR) is likely to play despite ankle trouble, and Artis Hicks (G) is probable although he has had elbow trouble. The Chiefs have had little to no injury problems. Alfonso Boone (DE) is probable after a thigh problem, and ViNCe Red (LB) is questionable with ankle problems.

Brodie Croyle and Tyler Thigpen figure to see plenty of action in this Game for the Chiefs. Croyle was the better of the two in the first preseason Game, completing 12 of 18 passes for 145 yards. On the other side of the ball Sage Rosenfels and Tarvaris Jackson will be competing for the backup role behind Favre. Rosenfels outgunned Jackson in their Game against the Colts but won’t play tonight.. While a tough player, signs point towards Jackson’s days as a Viking coming to an end soon.

The differeNCe between these teams is night and day. The Vikings are clearly much better, but this is the preseason. The fact that it is preseason really evens things out. Despite that I will still go with the Vikings because of their overall strength. I also expect the addition of Favre to add some fire to them.
