2013 Buffalo Bills

NFL Preview

Betting Predictions

The Buffalo Bills are coming off their second consecutive 6-10 season last year. The Bills started the year 3-3 straight-up and against the spread, and then the wheels just came off completely as they went a pathetic 3-7 in the final 10 Games of the season (4-6 ATS). One of Buffalo’s biggest downfalls was playing on the road, where they were just 2-6, with the average margin of defeat in the losses coming by almost 17 points per Game.

Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick mirrored the team’s performance with his play on the field, suffering through his second straight sub-par season after receiving a huge six-year contract extension in October of 2011 worth almost $60 million. Fitzpatrick threw for only 3,400 yards with 24 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. However, Buffalo’s two bright spots were running back C.J. Spiller (1,244 rushing yards and eight total TDs) and wide receiver Stevie Johnson, who had his third straight season of 1,000+ receiving yards. The team’s biggest problem was a terrible defense that ranked 26th in the league in points allowed at 27.2 per Game and 31st in rushing yards allowed, giving up more than 145 per Game. This despite signing defensive end Mario Williams to a monster six-year, $96 million deal last offseason.

The first step this offseason for the Bills was to find a new head coach after Chan GAiley was fired following his third losing season in a row. Buffalo didn’t look far for GAiley’s replacement as they kept things in state and hired Syracuse head coach Doug Marrone, who hopes to end the team’s 13-year playoff brought, the longest active streak in the NFL. The biggest offseason moves for the Bills came at QB, where they believe they have given themselves depth and situated their team for the future. Buffalo cut ties with Fitzpatrick in early March and later that month signed free agent Kevin Kolb to a two-year deal. Kolb hopes he has better days ahead of him with the Bills after his two-year stint in Arizona was a huge bust, largely due to injuries and iNConsistent play. Buffalo then surprised some people by selecting Florida State QB EJ Manuel in the first round of the NFL draft. Buffalo loves his skill set and athleticism and believes he has all the ability in the world to develop into a Cam Newton-type player. Manuel and Kolb are expected to compete for the starting job in the preseason.

The oddsmakers at 5Dimes have the Bills set at O/U 6.5 wins for the upcoming season. This number appears to be right on the money as they have put some good pieces in place for the future but are still very young and inexperieNCed. With a new coach and two new quarterbacks being implemented into the system, Buffalo should win either five or six Games at best.
