Analysis

10/27/13

Can we vote right now for NFL coach of the year? The Chiefs were likely going to be a team on the rise this year but a 7-0 start and the numbers they are putting up are 100% due to Andy Reid and his coaching staff. Bravo. The Chiefs are currently -7.5 point favorites over the Browns this week with a total of 39 at 5 Dimes sportsbook. The Game is in KC.

The Browns scored 37 points on the Bills and 31 on the Vikings. Remove those two Games from the rest and the Browns scored 10, 6, 17,17 and 13. Now they face a Chiefs team that has given up no more than 17 points in any Game this year.

The problem though, if looking to back the Chiefs, is that they aren’t much of a threat to extend a margin. Sure, they were able to do so against the Jags, Giants and Raiders but against teams with a pulse, 10 was the largest margin and that was the Eagles, who barely have a pulse. Not sure where we want to place the Browns in the big picture, but they are at least as good as the Texans and the KC/Hou Game last week as a 17-16 final.

If we were to take the Chiefs against the spread here, it would certainly have to be at -7 or less. We’re not going to lay the extra hook. But perhaps a better way to use the Chiefs would be as one leg of a two team 6 point teaser. Or even a moneyline parlay where you’re taking the Chiefs straight up and perhaps buying some points with another team to involve the use of some key numbers. Blindly playing teasers and moneyline parlays would fall into the category of sucker bets. However, they can be played wisely and in those cases always involve utilizing and crossing the key numbers of 3 and 7.

This strategy can pay dividends come playoff time especially when the teams you’re backing are at home. As far as this week goes, other teams you might consider using in with the Chiefs here would be the Patriots and Bengals. We’d likely choose the Bengals of the two. Either way, in this scenario, you’re asking the better teams, at home, to simply win straight up. Sometimes you have to think outside the box when you’re looking for ways to back good NFL teams. If you’re looking to back the Chiefs this week, we think this is the way to go.
