2013 New York Giants

NFL Preview

Betting Predictions

Fresh off their Super Bowl XLVI win over the New England Patriots, the New York Giants came into 2012 with high expectations. The Giants started out 6-2 (4-3-1 against the spread), looking like they were going to be serious contenders for the Lombardi Trophy yet again. However, they fell apart late in the season, going 3-5 both straight-up and ATS down the stretch to finish 9-7 and miss the playoffs behind the surprising NFC East division champion Washington Redskins.

New York quarterback Eli Manning fell just short of achieving 4,000 passing yards for the Fourth straight season, throwing for 3,948 yards, 26 touchdowns and 15 interceptions following a career-high 4,933 in 2011. Manning’s favorite target again was wide receiver Victor Cruz, who had another stellar season as he hauled in 86 receptions for 1,092 yards and 10 TDs. But fellow WR Hakeem Nicks had a down year compared to his previous two seasons as he only caught 53 passes for 692 yards and three TDs due to injuries. Running back Ahmad Bradshaw was solid when he was on the field, recording 1,260 yards of total offense and six TDs, but he also missed time for the second consecutive season with injuries. Pro Bowl defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul also had a pretty disappointing season with only 6.5 sacks, 10 less than he had during the Super Bowl season. The Giants offense ranked sixth in the league in points scored at 26.8 per Game, but their defense really fell off, ranking 31st in total yards allowed with 383.4 yards per Game, iNCluding 28th in passing yards (254.3 ypg) and 25th in rushing yards (129.1 ypg).

New York experieNCed an interesting offseason filled with some key additions and departures. On the offensive side of the ball, the Giants lost Bradshaw, WR Domenik Hixon and starting tight end Martellus Bennett. On defense, they also had some big losses in safety Kenny Phillips, defensive end Osi Umenyiora, defensive lineman Chris Canty, defensive tackle Rocky Bernard and linebackers Chase Blackburn and Michael Boley. However, they brought back cornerback Aaron Ross and added S Ryan Mundy, LB Dan Connor and veteran DEs Cullen Jenkins and Mike Patterson via free ageNCy. Many NFL betting experts think the Giants had a very solid draft, with first- round pick Justin Pugh expected to start on the offensive line. They also added great versatility and depth to an already strong defensive line by drafting DT Jonathan Hankins and DE Damontre Moore, who both could be big contributors right away as well.

The oddsmakers at 5Dimes have the Giants at O/U 9 wins for this season. This number looks to be right on the money, as New York lost a lot of key pieces in the offseason, which could keep the team from winning a very competitive NFC East against better teams like the Redskins and Dallas Cowboys. Expect the Giants to win nine Games again and just miss the playoffs.
