2013 Tennessee Titans

NFL Preview

Betting Predictions

Many NFL betting experts were not sure what to expect from the Tennessee Titans heading into last season as fraNChise running back Chris Johnson was coming off a career low in rushing yards and touchdowns in 2011 and second-year quarterback Jake Locker was under heavy pressure to perform well coming off a lackluster rookie campaign. The Titans started 3-6 straight-up and against the spread and did not close out much stronger, going 3-4 SU and ATS to end up with a disappointing 6-10 record and third-place finish in the AFC South.

Locker appeared in only 11 Games last season as he battled shoulder injuries and again underperformed, throwing for just 2,176 yards with more interceptions (11) than touchdowns (10). Veteran QB Matt Hasselbeck was not much better either with 1,367 passing yards, seven TDs and five INTs in the eight Games he played, iNCluding five starts. The Titans had three solid contributors at the wide receiver position in rookie Kendall Wright (64 receptions for 626 yards), Kenny Britt (45 for 589) and Nate Washington (46 for 746), with each of them scoring Four TDs. Johnson rebounded with 1,243 rushing yards and six TDs, which was still less than half of his ultimate goal of 2,500 that he said he could ACComplish after posting a 2K season in 2009. No matter how the Titans offense performed though, it would be extremely difficult to succeed with a defense that GAve up 29.4 points per Game to rank dead last in the league.

Tennessee owner Bud Adams chose to retain head coach Mike MuNChak despite the team’s disappointing performance last year, but offensive coordinator Chris Palmer was fired with QB coach Dowell LogGAins replacing him. Also worth noting is that the Titans brought in former New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams to be a defensive assistant to DC Jerry Gray. The team has made improving the offensive line a priority in the offseason, signing top offensive guard Andy Levitre along with Chris SpeNCer and Robert Turner as free agents while drafting Alabama OG ChaNCe WarMACk in the first round and California center Brian SChwenke in the Fourth. Johnson should definitely benefit from these moves and so should fellow RB Shonn Greene, who the Titans added in free ageNCy to give themselves a 1-2 puNCh of speed and power. Tennessee also drafted WR Justin Hunter out of Tennessee and added WR Kevin Walter and tight end Delanie Walker as free agents, giving Locker more weapons. On defense, the Titans added two quality safeties in free agents Bernard Pollard and George Wilson and drafted cornerback Blidi Wreh-Wilson out of Connecticut.

The oddsmakers at 5Dimes have the Titans at O/U 6.5 for the upcoming season. With a revamped offensive line, a healthy Locker and another solid RB in Greene to help spell Johnson, this team should win at least seven or eight Games with an outside shot at making the playoffs.
