Talk about pressure. The team from England has their backs up against the wall. The team is in disarray, as was suggested before they ever took the field in the Tournament, and it continues to get worse. Their lackluster performances have landed them a match with Germany in the round of 16.
The Germans beat Ghana and ripped Australia but did lose to Serbia. England on the other hand, has yet to lose, but has two draws, one to the US and one to Algeria in a Game in which they were outplayed, before beating Slovenia to advance to this round. In the Game against Algeria, their own fans were booing them, after which their was also talk of player mutinies.
The beautiful thing about the format of this Tournament, is that a win here makes all of that nastiness go away. A win here and the English team once again become heroes. A loss, and they may as well stay in South Africa as their lives will never be the same. Sounds harsh, yeah, but that’s how serious folks around the world take their soccer.
Historically, Germany has held the upper hand in this series. Though the past is the past. This time around, the odds are pretty even. You can back England to win at +165 or you can back Germany at +175. The Draw is +210. This is a Game between the youth of the German squad and the experience (and age) of the English team. Many observers feel veteran English stars like Wayne Rooney have nothing left in the tank.
If ever there was a good Game to predict a draw after 90 minutes, this would be the one. Both squads have played close, tight Games with the exception of the Germans blasting of the Aussies. Historically, it’s generally been close when these two have met. No reason to believe this one won’t follow suit. Heck, England has scored only two goals in 3 Games and aside from the goal explosion by Germany against Australia, they have just one other goal in the Tournament.
This one has 0-0 or 1-1 written all over it. We feel this Game ends up being decided with the shootout, which means the draw is the winner after 90 minutes.
