Preakness Undercard Betting
5/15/10
The Preakness Stakes isn't the only show in town on Saturday at Pimlico. There
are several other important stakes that could have big implications. Among those
races are the Chick Lang, Maryland Sprint, Gallorette, and Dixe Stakes. If you
can string together a few winners in a row and then get the Preakness winner you
may need a wheel barrow to carry all your money. Best of all, you can do this on
a very affordable ticket. Let's take a look at some of the undercard races at
Pimlico on Preakness day along with our picks for those races.
Grade 3 Chip Lang Stakes
Quiet Invader (5/2) He is working well on dirt for trainer Bob Baffert. He will
get the best of the 7/5 ML favorite Comedero. Jockey Martin Garcia gets the
call. He is a worthy single on Pick 3 tickets.
Grade 3 William Donald Schaefer Stakes
Blame (8/5) The favorite will be one of the front runners for Horse of the Year.
He should win his comeback race after a beautiful performance in the Clark
Handicap last out. You will probably be watching this colt in the Breeders' Cup
Classic later this year at Churchill Downs.
Grade 3 Gallorette Handicap
Quiet Meadow (10-1) The favorite, Rainbow View, will be tough. However, she is
much too short of a price at 1-1. We will go with the next best thing in this
filly that was second to Grade 2 winner Rutherienne two races back. She hasn't
put it all together yet, but she shows the potential to be a force in this
division.
Pick 4: 4,5,6,8/1,7,9,11/2,4,9/7
Grade 3 Maryland Sprint Handicap
Ravalo (5-1) He is a perfect 2 for 2 at Pimlico and he won this race last year.
The connections have set him up perfectly to defend his title. The Bill Mott
trained Snapshot also deserves a big look. He is 3-1 on the morning line.
Grade 2 Dixie Stakes
Rahystrada (6-1) The gelding is improving after winning an allowance event last
out at Keeneland. He broke the track record in that race. If he moves forward
again he will devour this field. We believe he can do that.
The races above are listed in the order in which they will be contested. We
recommend giving the Pick 4 a try. It is a low risk wager that can pay thousands
of dollars with a bit of luck. Rahystrada in the Dixie Stakes is our best bet of
the day other than Lookin at Lucky in the Preakness Stakes. It would be wise for
advanced handicappers to watch all of the races at Pimlico Racecourse and try to
identify and decide if a bias exists. Sometimes speed horses win all day because
the track favors them. Other days speed can't hold on and closers take
everything. It's nearly impossible to determine if there will be a bias on a
given day, but if there is you should adjust your handicapping accordingly.
