Breeders Cup Ladies Classic Preview and Picks

11/4/11

The 2011 Breeders’ Cup from Churchill Downs will begin on November 4 as Ladies Day sets the stage of the boys to do battle on Saturday. Ranking right up next to the Kentucky Derby and other Triple Crown races, the Breeders Cup is one of the best wagering opportunities all year long. Many millions of dollars will be wagered into each pool of the 15 championship races. This means a great chance for bettors to make a life changing score.

Let’s take a look at some of the races for the first day of the Breeders Cup.

The first Breeders Cup race for 2011 will be the Juvenile Sprint. This race is open which means Friday isn’t 100% for the ladies; just mostly. Bob Baffert’s Secret Circle figures to be a heavy favorite after an impressive minor stakes victory last out. Todd Pletcher has said his top filly Stopshoppingmaria may go in this spot. She will have much more than a puncher’s chance if she does.

One of my favorite races of the year will be the Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies. Steve Asmussen’s undefeated daughter of Smart Strike, My Miss Aurelia, figures to get the most support at the windows. An interesting choice could be Grace Hall from the barn of Tony Dutrow. She will be one of the only fillies in the race with a win going the Juvenile Fillies distance and around two turns.

Friday will feature a deep field in the Breeders Cup Filly & Mare Turf where the best Europe has to offer will ship across the pond in an effort to annex the $2 million purse.

Middday, winner of the 2009 version of the race, will do battle with Flower Bowl winner Stacelita. The latter has raced primarily in Europe, but was recently transferred to the barn of top American trainer Chad Brown. Midday was second last year and will look to become the first multiple winner of the Filly & Mare Turf since the great Ouija Board.

The Ladies Classic will be a decidedly worse race after the defection of the now retired Blind Luck and Havre de Grace who plans to take on the boys in the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

Top contenders for the Ladies Classic include Kentucky Oaks winner Plum Pretty, Acorn & CCA Oaks winner It’s Tricky and Alabama Stakes winner Royal Delta. The trio of three-year-old lasses has traded jabs all year long and it is likely that one of them will triumph in the absence of their most threatening elders. Miss Match could make an interesting upset candidate as she has been facing better against males.
