Odds and Schedule

After last year’s 7-0 start and No. 3 ranking in the AP Polls, Ole Miss hit a bit of a snag at the halfway point as injuries piled up. But after improving for the Fourth straight season in the win column, there’s no reason the Rebels can’t make it a fifth straight season with improvement, this time with double-digit wins.

ACCording to the odds posted at leading offshore sportsbook 5 dimes, Ole Miss is the 4th choice overall in the SEC at a tad over 5 to 1 to win the conference. To win the National Championship they are 43 to 1.

Replacing quarterback Bo Wallace is the biggest issue Ole Miss will run into. Hugh Freeze already said they could start the season with multiple quarterbacks getting snaps. Even if you don’t trust that statement, that just shows how close the race is between Ryan Buchanan, DeVante Kincade and JUCO transfer Chad Kelly.

That isn’t exactly a good thing, but whoever steps in will have a solid group to work with. Standout wide receiver LAquon Treadwell is expected to make a full recovery in time for the fall after breaking his fibula last season. They also have a deep core that is probably one of the best groups in the SEC. Running backs Jaylen Walton and Jordan Wilkins both return and that should help even more. While the Rebels didn’t have a great running Game a season ago, they could at least move the ball and they also return all five starters on the offensive line. Whoever is at quarterback has plenty of help.

The Rebels excelled on the defensive end in 2014 and that should be the case once again. Their front seven will be one of the best anchored by a beast in Robert Nkemdiche. Denzel Nkemdiche will return from injury at linebacker and that should help plenty as well. Even with experience across the board, this is still a group that has plenty of depth. The secondary loses two key guys, but Tony Conner is back at safety with Trae Elston. They may have lost some standout guys, but they aren’t lacking all that much.

The problem for Ole Miss this season may be in their Schedule. Three of their Conference road Games are at Alabama, Auburn and Mississippi State. Not many have a tougher road slate than that, and their Fourth is at Florida, a team that’s expected to improve. The Rebels get the Crimson Tide in their first SEC Game and if they still haven’t figured out their QB situation by then, that could be trouble against the Bama defense. Other than that, a couple revenge Games are on the home slate with LSU and Arkansas. Much like last year, this team has the players to compete with the best, but they will only get near the top if they get consistent quarterback play. Reaching 10 wins may prove to be too difficult with that road Schedule and an unknown quarterback.
