12/19/11 11-6 on Monday Nights after last weeks Seattle win. Now we finish things up with two consecutive blockbuster games. The game tonight between the Steelers and 49ers could very well be the Monday Night game of the year. Two playoff teams, capable of a Super Bowl run, both with fantastic defenses with plenty on the line. The Steelers have a chance to gain sole possession of 1st place in the AFC North after the Ravens loss to the Chargers. A loss here could drop the Steelers all the way down to a 5th seed in the playoffs while the 49ers are chasing the Saints for the 2nd spot in the NFC. Ben Rothlisberger is listed as probable but you can be sure he'll be behind center tonight. The 49ers are listed as a -3 point favorite at 5 Dimes with a total of 38. Aside from Big Ben, both teams also nursing other injuries. For the Steelers, Troy Polamalu is banged up and James Harrison is suspended. For the 49ers, Frank Gore is limping and linebacker Patrick Willis is doubtful. Tonight we will learn all we need to know about the 49ers and their chances in the up coming playoffs. We already know all we need to know about Big Ben and the Steelers. They have the big game experience. They have playoff veterans. They are built to win this time of year. The Steelers will be a tough draw for any team in the playoffs, home or away. But the 49ers? The Niners numbers are very impressive, particularly at home. Their numbers are on par with some great teams of the past. Put another way, if we forget about the names of the teams for a minute, teams with the exact same numbers as the 49ers have put up this year, have gone on to win Super Bowls. Teams with the exact same numbers as the 49ers have put up this year, would go out and win in dominating fashion, at home tonight. The Steelers would seem made to order for the 49ers defense tonight. One of Rothlisberger's strengths is his ability to scramble. To avoid sacks and make plays out of the pocket. Big Ben is nursing more than just a high ankle sprain. The guy is banged up from head to toe. Not what you want facing this 49ers defense. The Steelers numbers offensively haven't been great this year even with a healthier Rothlisberger, particularly on the road. The Steelers yards per point number offensively on the road this year is 19, which is terrible. Match that up with a 49ers defensive yards per point number of 24 at home and you'd have to come to the conclusion that the Steelers won't be lighting up the score board tonight. In fact the 49ers numbers are very good on both sides of the ball. Their ypp number offensively at home is a blistering 11. They have outscored opponents to the tune of 28-12 at home while the Steelers have been outscored on the road 18-20. Turnovers have also hurt the Steelers this year. They stand at -8 in that category while the 49ers are an NFL best +21. This game will tell us how the 49ers will fare in the playoffs. A loss here tonight and you can pretty much count on the 49ers not going far. After dropping two of the last 3, the last one against the Cardinals, they need this game in a huge way to restore confidence and prove to themselves that they can beat a playoff caliber team like the Steelers. The numbers say they'll do it. But as we saw
yesterday, the NFL gets whacky this time of year. Teams that the
numbers say will win, don't always win. But for us, it's the only
way to go. We see a 20-10 type win here for the 49ers with the
Niners "D" severely limiting Big Ben all night long.
49ers -3
