Nice Monday Night matchup with playoff spots on the line. Gotta love this time of year where, essentially, the playoffs start early. With both teams at 7-6, there's absolutely no room for error. The Lions are -6.5 to -7 point favorites here, depending on the sportsbook. 5 Dimes has the Lions -7 even with a total of 50.
The betting trends at sportsbook.com show a bookmakers dream. 50% of the wagers on each side. Of course, that's not 50% of the money wagered, it's 50% of the wagers taken. But still, we can guess that the actually money taken in here is probably fairly balanced, which is understandable as this one isn't an easy game to handicap.
The Lions could potentially be a really good football team. Heck, former Cowboys coach and FOX analyst Jimmy Johnson thinks they are the best of all playoff teams this year. Can't agree with him on that one. The Lions have some talent but they are way too inconsistent. Turnover margin is one of the best barometers for a football team. It's such a simple stat but at a glance tells a big story. When is the last time you saw a team with a negative turnover margin ratio compete in a title game at any level? I can't recall any.
I certainly can't recall any teams that were -10 in the turnover ratio category and that's where the Lions are going into this game. Kind of sums up the Lions year. You won't hurt your wallet by avoiding teams that turn the ball over. Unfortunately for those looking to bet this game tonight, the Ravens are also negative in that category, weighing in a -5.
It's not just turnovers that has us leery of the Lions. It's inconsistent play across the board. Most decent NFL teams have a distinct advantage at home. Not the case here. The Lions are 4-2 at home but their numbers at home, are not the numbers of a good team. They have an offensive yards per point number at home of 15, very mediocre, to go along with a very poor defensive number of 12.2. So, their ypp differential at home is roughly -3. Again, good teams don't have a negative ypp differential on the road. never mind at home.
The Ravens numbers on the road are equally as bad and very "un-raven-like". Using these ypp numbers to make a line though, the Lions would be favored by no more than a field goal. Not to take the drama out of such a big game, but in 30+ years of paying attention to these types of numbers, it's safe to say that neither of these teams will be lacing it up in February at Giants Stadium. Also safe to say that it's likely that neither of them will go very far in the playoffs, if they make it.
We could make a case for the Lions tonight based solely on our NFL score prediction model as 2 of our 3 sets of predictions says the Lions will cover the -6.5, one just barely. But we're going to back the Ravens here. Of their 6 losses this year, only one game was decided by more than TD and that was the first game of the year against Peyton Manning and the Broncos. It's been close games galore for the Ravens this year so see no reason for that trend not to continue here against an inconsistent Lions team with a defense that leaves a lot to be desired. Ravens +7 -120
