Bears at Vikings - At least we get a
Monday Night game with at least a little juice to it. The Bears are sure to miss
the playoffs, short of some miracle mathematical situation. But the Vikings are
very much in the thick of things and are one of the hottest teams in football at
just the right time.
A win here sets up a huge game next Sunday Night in prime time between the
Redskins and these Vikings. Make no mistake about it, the Vikings are the better
team on both sides of the ball and should win here. All year we heard how the
Vikings had nothing but a running game and a decent defense. Tell that to the
last 3 opponents they faced as they beat them all by 20+ points scoring 27, 42
and 41 points. They have scored 27+ points in 5 of their last 6 games. If you
take out the one loss against the Packers, in the other 5 wins they are giving
up on average just 14 points per game and the Bears have to come in tonight with
Kyle Orton at QB (maybe that's a blessing).
You'd have to question the Bears motivation as well. A lost season, down to
their 3rd string QB, and all this on the heels of playing in the Super Bowl last
year. A major disappointment for the Bears this year who just want this season
to be done with.
But it's also a time of year to use caution as a bettor. Countless times over
the years we have seen superior teams that simply have to win to keep their
playoff hopes alive, and they lay an egg. All the pressure is squarely on them
while a team like the Bears can play loose and take chances, they have nothing
to lose. (Cowboys-Eagles Sunday is an example)
The Bears have lost just one game by more than 11 points all year and that
was to the Cowboys back in September. Their 11 point loss came to the Chargers
in the first game of the year. Every other lose was by less than what the spread
is on this game tonight, which is 11 in some spots.
The Vikings just want the "W" here. They'll do everything in their power to
shorten this game and get it over with. That means, per usual, Adrian Peterson
left, and Adrien Peterson right, which plays into the hands of those backing the
Bears tonight.
We think Minny gets the win here setting up that huge game next week with the
Redskins. But we'll take a shot that the win is by less than the number here as
the Bears play with pride and perhaps find the Quarterback of their future in
Orton, while Minny just runs time off the clock so they can move on.
It's unfortunate we haven't had more games this year on Monday Nights that we
could make regular plays. As you know, you don't bet games just because its
Monday Night or just because you can watch it on TV. You bet games because you
feel you have an edge, and those edges simply haven't materialized for us, on
Monday Nights this year. That's mostly the result of parity in the NFL and the
watered down product they offer these days.
