2* Saints/Ravens Under 51 - Other than giving up 43 to the Steelers a couple of weeks ago, the Ravens defense has been doing it's job. Take that Steelers game out of the mix and the Ravens have given up on average 15.3 points per game. Not too shabby. Their defensive yards per point number of 18.5 ties them for 3rd overall in the NFL. If the Ravens "D" shows up as it has just about every week this season, there's enough wiggle room with this total to keep it under as the Saints offense isn't as good as most think (their offensive yards per point number of 16.3 ranks 19th overall)
2* Ravens +3 over Saints - Yeah, the Saints are at home and in a must win spot. Well, maybe not a "must" win spot. The NFC South is horrendous. They could actually make the playoffs with a losing record. But an important game nonetheless.
But at some point in every NFL season, you have to begin to trust the numbers and the numbers say the Ravens are the better team. Our power ratings and each teams yards per point numbers agree, though our NFL model has this one VERY close, actually ending in a tie when we use the last 7 games worth of data only.
Another stat we love to take a glance at is turnover margin because of the correlation between turnovers and wins and losses. Here are the top 3 teams in turnover margin differential in the NFL.
Here are the BOTTOM 3
The combined record of the top 3 teams is 26-7. The combined record of the bottom 3 is 4-28. So why mention this here? Well, guess who the 4th WORST team in this very important category is? You guess it, the Saints! They weigh in at -9 and, no surprise, a losing record.
It's easy to over handicap a game and ignore the numbers. The Saints are at home where historically over the last several years they have been money etc. etc.
We choose to have faith in the numbers. The Ravens are the better team in this matchup. At 6-4, they need this game to keep pace with the rest of their division who all have 7 wins. The Ravens may be better than all 3 of their division rivals but a loss here will put them in the basement of the AFC North looking up.
We'll take the better team plus the spot.
