Kansas vs. Kansas St

2/14/09

Last season this match up between in state rivals was huge! The Jayhawks were playing phenomenal basketball last year which resulted in an eventual NCAA championship over John Calipari’s Memphis Tigers. Kansas State also had a lot of success behind their super Freshman Michael Beasley, but like many superstars in college basketball Beasley was one and done.

This season both teams have quite a different look to them with Kansas sitting at the 16 ranking in the country and Kansas State struggling to break into the Top 25.

The Jayhawks have been perfect at home with an undefeated 14-0 record at Allen Field house Arena with their only losses coming on the road to UMass, Arizona, Michigan State and just recently in a heart breaker to Conference rival Missouri.

Coming into the match up against Missouri last Monday the Jayhawks were on an eight Game winning streak which started with a win against the Kansas State Wildcats back on January 13th.

When the Kansas Jayhawks started getting it going against the Missouri Tigers it looked like they were going to make it nine straight wins and just another win over a Conference opponent as they were up on Missouri by 14 points at the half. Missouri had other plans in the second as they went off for 46 points and ended up beating their Conference rivals by two points 62-60.

With that huge loss to Missouri the Jayhawks will be looking to rebound quickly and not lose any more ground in the Big 12 Conference as they try and chase Big 12 leading Oklahoma Sooners.

Although the Kansas State Wildcats are on a roll as of late winning Four straight, the Jayhawks will come into this Game with all the confidence as they beat the Wildcats in convincing fashion last time they met back in mid January by 16 points.

The Wildcats will arguably be the hotter team coming into this match up as they have beaten some very good teams as of late including Missouri who just beat Kansas. With wins over Texas and Missouri the Wildcats just might have a legit chance of pulling off the upset over the Jayhawks.

The key to the Jayhawks not letting their rivals get the best of them will be containing the Wildcats deadly duo of guards in Denis Clemente and Jacob Pullen. These two have been solid on the offensive end for the Wildcats as they combine for over 27 points a Game.

Kansas also have a pair of dynamic players who can also put up the points in center Cole Aldrich, who is scoring 14.3 points and 10 rebounds a Game, and guard Sherron Collins who contributes with a team leading 17.6 points and 5 assists per contest.

Kansas opened up as a 1 point favorite here. We’re going to back the slight home dog in this one. Kansas State +1
