Arkansas Razorbacks vs. Georgia Bulldogs

Current Betting Line: Georgia -2.5 Check for updates

9/18/10

It wasn’t as clean as Coach Petrino would’ve liked, but the Arkansas Razorbacks overwhelmed Louisiana- Monroe 31-7 in week 2 play. The Hogs GAined 499 yards of total offense, 400 through the air, despite scoring only 7 points by half time. They have high hopes for the 2010 season and their first big Game of the year happens this week against the Georgia Bulldogs. HC Richt’s team fell to a strong South Carolina team in the abseNCe of star WR AJ Green. He will also miss this Game. Last year’s Game between these two Conference foes was a 52-41 shootout in favor of Georgia.

The Razorbacks had an overall record of 8-5 in 2009. They were a very stellar 6-1 on the road. Regular backers of the team did well as they finished 7-4-1 ATS. The Bulldogs were 5-7 ATS last year and 4-2 in home Games. Georgia has won the past two meetings between these schools and 9 of the last 10. Past stats favor the Bulldogs, but the old saying goes past performance is no guarantee of future results.

Arkansas has a Heisman Trophy candidate in QB Ryan Mallett. The junior stands tall at 6-7 and possesses the strongest arm in NCAA football. In only two weeks of play he has passed for 700 yards and 6 TDs. He had a total of 30 in 2009. Some of his best targets iNClude TE Greg Childs, WR Jarius Wright, WR Joe Adams, and WR DJ Williams. Childs caught 7 TDs last year and had two last week against Louisiana Monroe. The running Game is solid thanks to Ronnie Wingo and Broderick Green. Look for Petrino to get them a few carries in order to mix things up and keep Georgia on their toes.

One of the biggest problems for Arkansas last year was a weak defense. That shouldn’t hinder them so much this year. They have 7 starters back from last years team. Jerry Franklin is tough at MLB. He led the team in tackles at 94 last year and had 3 INTs. DE Jake Bequette is a strong pass rusher and will have his ears pinned back in pursuit of Georgia’s freshman QB Aaron Murray. Although it appears the Hogs defense is stronger, this will be their first real test.

Any chance of a Georgia win against South Carolina ended when RB Washaun Ealey fumbled on the three yard line. All in all, the offense put up a measly 6 points and had trouble moving the ball. Freshman QB Aaron Murray will be better for the experieNCe, but he didn’t play good or bad. He was merely OK. Without AJ Green lining up, his job will be a lot harder than need be. Murray should have an easier job against the Arkansas secondary than he did against South Carolina. Look for Richts offense to scoresome points despite getting shut down against South Carolina.

The defense at Georgia was trampled on by freshman Marcus LAttimore last week. The Razorbacks will seek victory through the air. Georgia’s secondary isn’t any more capable of stopping the pass than the line is off stopping the run. If Arkansas is clicking there will be little this team can do to stop them from putting points on the board. Junior CB Brandon Boykin is one of the bright spots on defense. He had 3 INTs and 54 tackles last year.

Revenge is sweet, and Ryan Mallett and his Arkansas Razorbacks will be searching for it after losing to Georgia last year. The Hogs have too many weapons on offense to count and a defense that is only going to improve. Line opened at pk and climbed to Georgia -2.5. We think the oddsmakers had it right. We’d like it to climb a little higher. At Arkansas +3, we’re interested.
