Michigan is back. Or at least that’s the thought after it ran through Notre Dame last weekend. The Wolverines still have a chance to revive their season and live up to lofty expectations, but that’ll eventually require a win over Ohio State. They should have no problems against Maryland, opening as -19 point road favorites with an over/under of 56.

This isn’t the matchup Maryland needs to get back on track and unfortunately it has to play Ohio State after this one. The Terrapins have lost their last three with the most recent being a 52-10 loss to Minnesota.

While they played somewhat better in their last home game against Indiana, they already lost 59-0 at home to Penn State so a big loss can happen. This game wasn’t competitive last year, though the final 42-21 score is closer than it was because the Terps got a couple fourth-quarter touchdowns. That’s their hope in this one because the offense could struggle to produce again.

Maryland’s offense has yet to do anything against a good defense and that’s what Michigan brings to the table, allowing 110.6 rushing yards and 18.4 points per game.

Quarterback Josh Jackson was healthy last week, but barely saw the field. No matter the quarterback, Maryland will struggle to pass the ball between Jackson and Tyrell Pigrome, who have a combined 6.7 yards per attempt and 53.2% completion rate.

They have a decent backfield between Javon Leake and Anthony McFarland, but with Michigan’s defense likely focused on stopping that, it probably won’t work as well as their 5.3 yards per carry suggests.

The other issue for the Terps is that their defense may be worse than the offense, allowing 150.5 rushing yards and 29 points per game. The Wolverines also have a quarterback issue with Shea Patterson, who is averaging 7.6 yards per attempt, but their offensive line is a bit better and that’s why they dominated Notre Dame.

They’ll likely run the ball all game between Hassan Haskins and Zach Charbonnet, who combined for 223 yards against the Irish. It hasn’t been easy to bet on this Michigan offense, but it has had more success in recent games, at least running the ball.

The other part to Michigan is that it hasn’t looked truly good on the road outside of the second half against Penn State. It was blown out by Wisconsin and couldn’t pull away from Illinois in its other two road trips.

While almost every sign points to Michigan, it wouldn’t be surprising if Maryland busted out a long run or two and got a late cover, similar to what Illinois did to Michigan.

The over has hit in Michigan’s last five road games, but Michigan has failed to cover in its last nine road games against a team with a losing home record.

The over is 4-1 in Maryland’s last five at home. The Wolverines have covered the last four meetings between these schools with the smallest spread of those being 13.5 points.
