Wednesday’s NBA Playoff Match Ups

(Dallas Mavericks @ Denver Nuggets Game 5)

If I could define this year’s NBA Playoffs I would just one word: Physical!

In almost every single NBA Playoff series so far there have been flagrant fouls, ejections, questionable calls at the end of Games and suspensions. The physicality that has been so prevalent throughout the Playoffs so far I can’t remember an NBA Playoffs this physical in recent memory. It reminds me of the old Jordan rules in the Chicago Bulls and Detroit Pistons, Miami Heat and New York Knicks or even the heated Knicks and Bulls rivalry back in the day. Old school basketball! I am loving it!

One of the most physical series has been the Denver Nuggets against the Dallas Mavericks. The Nuggets have proved thus far that they are the better team, but the Mavs have refused to die as they won Game Four in the face of elimination mostly due to the amazing 44 point performance by Dirk Nowitzki.

Not only did Dirk have a breakout performance in Game Four with 44 points and only misses one shot the entire Game, but Carmelo Anthony kept up with Dirk all Game long and finished with a team high 41 points.

When it comes down to the Nuggets are the better all around team period. They have the young superstar scorer in Carmelo, the experienced veteran point guard in Chauncey Billups and a bench full of more than capable role players who bring it night in and night out.

The Dallas Mavericks on the other hand only really have Dirk Nowitzki. Yes, they have a future hall of fame point guard in Jason Kidd and the sixth man of the year in Jason Terry, but all three of these guys aren’t getting any younger and are finding it harder and harder to compete with the young up and coming Nuggets in this series.

Honestly, this series should have been over in Dallas. If it weren’t for Dirk being absolutely on fire in Game Four the Nuggets would be already on their way to their first Western Conference finals series since 1985.

Every single aspect of Denver Nuggets is at the top of their Game. Carmelo Anthony has embraced his role and has started to flOurish. Chauncey Billups is playing for his home town team and is living up to his Mr. Big Shot reputation. Nene Hilario is finally injury free and is turning into the kind of player the Nuggets had hope for when they drafted him some years ago and the bench is filled with players that are having breakout seasons like JR Smith and Chris “The Birdman” Anderson.

Dallas may have Dirk, but he will not be nearly enough for the Mavs to come out of a 3-1 hole against the red hot Nuggets in Denver. I fully expected this series to end in Game five and the Denver Nuggets to advance to the Western Conference finals. In fact I don’t even think Game five will be a close Game. I see a 20+ blowout for Denver on the horizon and another huge Game for both Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups.
