LSU AT AUBURN

Saturday 9/20  - 7:45 PM EST

This game features two ranked teams in the top ten. With the Auburn Tigers leading the Southeastern Conference in the Western Division at 1-0 {Overall 3-0}, the Tigers of LSU are only one game behind Auburn and is 2-0 for this young season.

Last week Wes Byrum kicked a 36-yard field goal in the second quarter and that was all No. 9 Auburn needed to defeat Mississippi State 3-2 on Saturday night. The Tigers (3-0, 1-0 Southeastern Conference) committed three turnovers, missed two field goals and handed the Bulldogs their only points with a safety.

But Auburn allowed only 116 yards to Mississippi State (1-2, 0-1). The Tigers new spread offense still has lots of work to do. Chris Todd was 14-for-26 for 154 yards and Ben Tate ran for 92 yards on 20 carries. The offense struggled so much, even the defense started to get worried in this game.

As for LSU last week, Charles Scott keeps breaking loose for long gains and LSU's running game looks as powerful as ever.

If the seventh-ranked Tigers don't find a passing game to match, they may not have it so easy when they begin Southeastern Conference play at Auburn next weekend.

Scott ran for touchdowns of 39 and 43 yards, Trindon Holliday scored on a 92-yard punt return, and LSU cruised to a 41-3 victory over winless North Texas on Saturday night.

The dominant victory came at a price. Starting linebacker Darry Beckwith left the game with an apparent knee injury. Beckwith could not put any pressure on his injured leg as two trainers helped him to the sideline, where he was given crutches.

LSU head coach Les Miles declined to specify what the injury was other than to say "lower body."

For the second time in as many games, LSU (2-0) didn't need much of a passing game to win big. However, Miles said earlier in the week that he hoped to see his new quarterbacks complete more passes downfield in their second game, and that didn't happen often.

Tonight’s Preview:

Since the 2000 season, the winner of the LSU-Auburn game has gone on to represent the SEC Western Division in the league's championship game six times. LSU moved up a spot to No. 6 in the nation this week following its 41-3 win over North Texas. LSU has now been ranked in the top 10 in both the AP Top 25 and the USA Today Coaches Poll for a school-record 26 straight weeks. That streak dates back to Nov. 12, 2006.

LSU goes into the Auburn game boasting a balanced attack on offense as the Tigers are averaging 41.0 points per game and 442.0 yards per contest (241.0 rushing, 201.0 passing). Defensively, LSU has only surrendered 16 points this year, which includes allowing just three first half points. The Tiger defense has held its first two opponents to an average of 48 rushing yards and 219 total yards of offense. Individually, RB Charles Scott leads the SEC in rushing with 131 yards per game. In two games, Scott has rushed for 262 yards and four scores. LSU has used a two quarterback system (Andrew Hatch and Jarrett Lee) and the duo has combined to connect on 33 of 59 passes for 402 yards and three scores. WR Brandon LaFell has been their favorite target, leading the team and ranking among the leaders in the SEC with 11 catches for 156 yards and two TDs. Defensively, S Harry Coleman is tops on the team with 10 tackles.

Auburn has won nine of its last 12 games against top-10 opponents, including six in a row at home. Auburn has beaten at least one top-10 team in each of the previous seven seasons. Auburn is 15-2 in home night games since 2000, including a 4-0 mark against nationally ranked opponents. Auburn leads the nation in opponents’ third-down conversion percentage, surrendering just three first downs in 46 attempts (6.5 percent). Auburn ranks third nationally in scoring defense (5.0), ninth in rushing defense (53.0) and 10th in total defense (213.7). Auburn has not allowed a point in the first half this season. Robert Dunn ranks 11th nationally in punt returns (21.4), and his 193 punt return yards are third most in the nation. Rodgeriqus Smith needs one reception and 44 receiving yards to move into the top 10 on Auburn’s career lists in both categories. Thirteen different players have caught passes for Auburn this season, including 11 in the Sept. 6 game against Southern Miss, which was the most in a game by Auburn since 2005. Auburn has played 12 true freshmen already this season. Auburn has won 17 of its last 22 games decided by seven points or less, and is 29-13 under Tommy Tuberville in games decided by seven or fewer points. Auburn has covered the last 3 meetings and has beaten LSU the last four times these two have tussled at Jordan-Hare. Les Miles only 2-6-1 vs. line as visitor the last two seasons.

Auburn leads the SEC and ranks third nationally in scoring defense (5.0), while LSU is 10th nationally (8.0). LSU is fifth nationally in rushing defense (48.0) while Auburn is ninth (53.0). In total defense, Auburn is 10th nationally (213.7) and LSU is 12th (219.0). With two strong defenses on display, a repeat of the last two games played in Jordan-Hare Stadium might be in order. Auburn won low-scoring games by scores of 10-9 in 2004 and 7-3 in 2006.

5 of 8 games in this series have gone UNDER THE TOTAL since 1992

Pick: Under 38 & Auburn +2.5
