Preakness Stakes Contenders

New Faces in the Crowd

5/12

The Preakness Stakes is always one of the best wagering opportunities of the year. The Kentucky Derby winner in is ALWAYS over bet no matter how worthy he may be. In many cases this overflow of money on the winner of the Run for the Roses is warranted, but in many more it isn't. Let's take Fusiachi Pegasus for example. He dominated the Triple Crown trail and easily won the Kentucky Derby, but in the Preakness he was downed by Red Bullet. The son of Unbridled left Fusiachi Pegasus in his wake winning by 3 ¾ lengths. Will someone take down Super Saver? It's hard to tell, but let's take a look at the new shooters who will try.

Complete odds to win the Preakness are available at Sportsbook.com - The largest sportsbook in the world.

Hurricane Ike - How ironic would it be if Calvin Borel lost the Preakness to a horse that he piloted last out? That would be the case if ‘Ike can get the job done. John Sadler will send the Derby Trial winner to Pimlico after failing in the Kentucky Derby with the highly though of Sidney's Candy and Line of David. This colt is getting better with every start. He defeated a great colt last out named Eightyfiveinafifty. His running style is conducive to Pimlico. He should be near the lead. This colt is a son of Graeme Hall who won the Arkansas Derby and Jim Dandy Stakes. Distance will be no problem. We like Ike.

Pleasant Prince - Don't let the second place finish behind Ice Box in the Florida Derby fool you. This colt isn't nearly as good as Ice Box. He has raced twice since that effort finishing off the board in the Bluegrass Stakes and third in the Derby Trial. He has got to be tired by now and it would be very shocking to see the son of $1,000 sire Indy King take the second leg of the Triple Crown.

Caracortado - This son of Cat Dream's name mean "scarface" in Spanish. If not for bad luck he might have been in the Kentucky Derby. He took the Grade 2 Robert Lewis Stakes early on in 2010, but due to a lack of pace missed next out in the San Felipe. He had to alter course and check several times in the Santa Anita Derby. The closer will need a rapid pace to have a chance in the Preakness. He has done little wrong in his career. With a big effort trainer Michael Machowsky could find himself in the winner's circle with the colt that he bred.

A Little Warm - This is a colt who has answered most of the questions surrounding him. Many thought he couldn't go the distance in the Louisiana Derby, but he repelled several bids on the lead before finishing a close second to Mission Impazible. With Conveyance out of picture he could be the speed of the race. It would have been ideal for him to have another race, but the layoff shouldn't hurt him too much. Anthony Dutrow is carrying on the family banner with brother Rick who took the Preakness in 2008 with Big Brown. He will have A Little Warm ready to run a huge race.

Schoolyard Dreams - Trainer Derek Ryan sent out Musket Man to a win in the Illiniois Derby and a third place finish in the Kentucky Derby last year. This year he has the unlucky Schoolyard Dreams who was second by a nose in the Tampa Bay Derby earlier this year. It was one of the toughest beats we have ever seen. Jockey Eibar Coa thinks this one has the potential to be even better than Musket Man. He is working up a storm and must be considered on all exotic tickets.
