The high flying SMU Mustangs face off against Tulsa this week as they try to get revenge for last year’s 27-24 Tulsa win. SMU is riding high at 5-0 on the season, fresh off of a 48-21 rout over USF last week.
Shane Bueschele, the Texas transfer, continued his great start to the season with a very efficient 21-25 for 226 yards and 3 touchdowns. Running back Xavier Jones had a very impressive day with 155 yards two touchdowns on only 15 carries.
Tulsa continues their up and down season, rotating wins and losses currently at 2-2, but last week they did sneak out a tight 24-21 win over Wyoming, thanks to a late 19 yard touchdown run by Shamari Brooks with 3 minutes to go to take the lead and were able to hold on.
SMU’s offense has been stellar this season, putting up over 44 points per game, with a pretty balanced attack with 288 yards passing per game and 222 yards rushing per game.
Tulsa will need to execute a perfect game plan in order to keep up. Tulsa’s junior quarterback Zach Smith is coming off a good performance with 354 yards passing and 2 touchdowns, but was sacked an incredible 7 times. He will need to stay upright this week if he wants to out duel Bueschele.
Xavier Jones has been a touchdown machine this year for SMU, already with a total of 11 so far. Wideout Reggie Roberson Jr is leading the way for the Mustangs with 30 catches 510 yards and 3 touchdowns. Tulsa’s go to wide receiver this year has been sophomore Sam Crawford Jr, he has 22 catches for 329 yards and 2 touchdowns.
SMU is a 13 point home favorite this week and the total is 62. SMU is 5-0 this year against the spread, while Tulsa is 2-2 thus far.
Tulsa has won 4 of the last 5 matchups straight up. I believe hitting this over is a very good chance, if SMU does their normal 45-50 points only need 2 touchdowns from Tulsa and it cashes.
Our Pick – SMU -12.5
