The Tennessee Vols will host the Missouri Tigers this week as they look to go 2-0 after last weeks win over South Carolina. The Vols are early 10 point home favs with a total of 48.
(Check that. Literally as this is being written at 10 am est. on Monday morning, the Vols side is getting hit with an across the board steam move. Mostly 11’s now.)
Did Bama Take Foot Off Gas?
You may look at the final score for Mizu against Bama and think they held their own. However, it was 28-3 at the half. Alabama took their foot off the gas and coasted to a win.
That continued a losing trend from last season. After a 5-1 start last year. Mizu dropped 5 straight before winning their final game against Arkansas to get to 6 wins.
The Vols on the other hand were the exact opposite. They started 2-5 before winning their final 6 games including a Bowl win to cap an 8 win season. They then continued that winning streak by beating South Carolina last week.
In last years meeting, Tennessee QB Jarrett Guarantano picked apart the Mizu defense. He threw for 415 yards with two TD’s en route to a 24-20 win over the Tigers.
Defense Could Keep Tigers In It
But the Tigers defense should be the strength of this team, at least until the offense catches up. it’s a formidable unit. In last years loss to the Vols, Tennessee never led by more than a TD.
Furthermore, last weeks win over South Carolina, a 4-8 team a year ago, was far from dominant. In fact, it was a tight game all the way through and the box score shows an even game statistically (SC won time of possession battle 35 min – 25 min).
If and when the Vols start winning by big margins, we’ll start considering them as double digit favs. But in this spot, with 100,000 fans missing in action, we’ll give the Tigers a chance to make a game of it.
