BELMONT STAKES PICKS

PREVIEW OF EACH ENTRY

By Ryan Patterson

On Saturday June 7, 2008 Big Brown will attempt to become the 12th Triple Crown winner in the history of horse racing. We have seen many horses do what he has done thus far only to falter on the this final leg, this test of champions. Big Brown has something on his side that many of them did not. He is undefeated and has never had another horse look him in the eye. Kent Desormeaux has not had to ask Big Brown for everything he has yet. Will he have to do that in the Belmont Stakes? There is only one way to find out. Below is a preview of each horse followed by Our official Belmont Stales picks including win, place, show as well as a trifecta and superfecta.

#1 Big Brown– What can I say about this colt that hasn’t already been said? He has been bulletproof so far. Despite this, horses are not MAChines. This will be his third race in five weeks, so he has every excuse to bounce if he does. He will break from the rail, something he hasn’t had to do yet. I still expect him to run a great race. The stars have aligned, Our Triple Crown winner has arrived.

#2 Gaudalcanal– You can throw this one out, he has ZERO chance. This horse winning would be the equivalent of the Miami Dolphins winning the Super Bowl.

#3 MACho again– The white hot Garrett Gomez will pick up the mount on this colt. He has serious distance questions. Although he was second in the Preakness, he didn’t beat much. I could see him picking up third or Fourth possibly, but his chances for the runner up nod are slim.

#4 Denis of Cork– The first thing that comes to mind when I look at this horse is the fact that Calvin Borel has lost the mount. I can only guess as to why, but the horse had success with him. Robby Albarado will get the call this time. The added distance of the Belmont Stakes should bode well for this deep closer. Their doesn’t seem to be enough speed to set up for him, but it wouldn’t be a shocker if he won. I’m thinking he is looking at second or third most likely.

#5 Casino Drive– He lies the main threat to Big Brown’s Triple Crown conquest. As you probably already know, this colt is a ¾ sibling to the 2007 winner Rags to Riches, and ½ sibling to the 2006 winner, Jazil. Distance should be no problem. His win in the Peter Pan was awfully impressive, and he gets Edgar Prado who has won the race several times. Look for him to be right there when they come down to the wire.

#6 Da’ Tara– Little to no chance, you can put an X on this one.

#7 Tale of Ekati- Barclay Tagg will be in the spoiler role this time, instead of going for the Crown as he was with Funny Cide in 2003. Strangely, Big Brown has been in the stall of the 2003 winner Empire Maker, who defeated Funny Cide. Time for a little role reversal? Probably not, as dstance is a serious concern, and I think he isn’t good enough anyway. I would include him third and Fourth on the exotics, but don’t count on him for second.

#8 Anak Nakal– This ones name means “mischievous child” in Arabic. He could prove mischievous with jockey Leparoux back up, who was aboard for his Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club victory. He hasn’t been the same horse since. I would use him third and Fourth as a price horse, but he is not a horse you MUST include.

#9 Ready’s Echo– I like ascending Beyer Speed Figure pattern on this one, but he is probably outclassed in this spot. I wouldn’t use him on my exotic tickets.

#10 Icabad Crane– I had the pleasure of watching this horse in person at Turfway Park in the Rushaway Stakes. He is quite a horse, and went from there to win the Federico Tesio Stakes at Pimlico. He had a bit of trouble in the Preakness and still ran a Game third. I encOurage you to use him second and third in your exotics.

                                        Top Sportsbooks

PREAKNESS STAKES 2007

Granted, the Preakness Stakes does not compare to the excitement of the Kentucky Derby. But it’s still the 2nd leg of the Triple Crown and will have all eyes on Pimlico to see if Street Sense can grab the win and then move on to Belmont in three weeks to attempt to become the first Triple Crown winner in three decades.

For the sake of horse racing, I would love to see Street Sense win the triple Crown. Horse Racing has been in desperate need of a boost, long before last years tragedy with Barbaro at this very same track and race.

When I was a kid just getting into watching the races, Seattle Slew won the Triple Crown. From that year on, I was hooked. The following year, Affirmed won the Triple Crown and I figured hey, this is great, I wonder who’s going to win the Triple Crown next year! Little did I know almost 30 years would pass and still no Triple Crown winner since Affirmed.

Point being, a Triple Crown winner would go a long way towards saving this great sport and has the potential to hook in a new generation of race fans.

So yeah, I’ll be rooting for Street Sense from that perspective. However, from a wagering standpoint, there’s very little opportunity in this 9 horse race with the favorite sitting at 7/5 and his two Derby cohorts Curlin and Hard Spun not far behind on the tote board. The only chance of making any kind of a Score in this race is to have one of the longer shots either hit the board to boost up the exotics payoffs, or, pull an outright upset and win the race.

So does anyone else have a shot?

While not a long shot, I think Hard Spun could give Street Sense trouble here. This race is much shorter than the Derby. In the Derby, Hard Spun was right there at the end and while Street Sense was the better horse and had more left in his tank, the shorter distance could be the key for Hard Spun as Street Sense will have to make his move much sooner in this race. Remember, Street Sense came from 19th to over take the Derby field. Remember also the Street Sense and jockey Calvin Borel had the home field advantage in the Derby. Now they have to go on the road. Just so happens Hard Spuns rider Mario Pino has run at Pimlico 15,000 times and knows every nook and cranny of that track.

Anyone else have much of a chance? It doesn’t appear so…….

Xchanger 15/1 – This horse is the only one in the field to have raced at this track. Won the Federico Tesio here back in April against suspect opposition however. Curlin beat this horse by 12 lengths in another race.

Circular Quay 8/1 – Had a long layoff leading up to the Derby, which he finished 6th in. He could be ready to peak for this one.

Curlin 7/2 – Had to overcome trouble in the Derby and suffered his first defeat. Can’t count Curlin out but the price will be too high.

Folks, your best bet in this race is probably to sit back and root for Street Sense to win in order to set up a very exciting day 3 weeks from now for the Belmont Stakes as we all watch to see if we finally get another Triple Crown winner.

However, if you’re going to take a shot, your best chance is to include Xchanger and Circular Quay in your exotics and hope they hit the board or pull a miracle upset.

You may also want to look at individual match ups for some decent prices. Here are some current match up prices :

Street Sense -195 vs Hard Spun +155

Street Sense -190 vs Curlin +150

Hard Spun -135 vs Curlin +105

Circular Quay -185 vs King of Roxy +155

Flying First Class -170 vs Xchanger +140

Hard Spun -210 vs Circular Quay +170

If you make any wagers, good luck. Either way, enjoy the race!!!

                                                                      Top Sportsbooks

BIG BROWN KENTUCKY DERBY BETTING FAVORITE

MAY 3, 2008

The post positions have been drawn, odds have been set and seemingly infinite crates of bOurbon alongside Sugar syrup and mint are in storagein anticipation for all the Mint Julep that will be consumed at the famous Churchill Downs track this weekend.

When they established the odds for the Derby, Big Brown became the big favorite at 8-5. Among the other betting favorites are Colonel John and Pyro who are 4-1 and 5-1 respectively.

But while futures betting is on the menu, so are a bevy of other wagers, including matchup bets.

While the Kentucky Derby will take place on Saturday, the Kentucky Oaks will take place this evening with Proud Spell, who has post position 8, listed as the odds-on +250 fav followed by Country Star (post position 6) at +350.

Proud Spell has $880,000 in Graded Earnings and a 7-4-2-1 race record compared to Country Stars $580,300 and 3-2-1-0.

In the matchups, Proud Spell is obviously favored (-155) against Country Star (+125) and the betting action is reflective with Proud Spell seeing 70% of the wagers to Country Stars 30% at 5dimes.com.

Big Brown is not only the betting favorite for Saturdays Kentucky Derby; Big Brown is seeing a majority of the action in all matchup bets.

Of all the matchups involving Big Brownwho is running in post position 20the one involving Pyro (post position 9) has the biggest potential payout. against Pyro, Big Brown is a -170 favorite (Pyro is +135) and Big Brown is seeing 81% of the betting action so far.

The betting public however, doesnt seem so certain about Big Brown against Colonel John, who drew post position 10. Big Brown has a race record of 3-3-0-0 and has Graded Earnings of $600,000 but the good Colonel has amassed Graded Earnings of $720,000 and a record of 6-4-2-0 and is a +120 underdog to -150 fave Big Brown.

But the betting action isnt nearly as lopsided as the Big Brown-Pyro matchup as Colonel John is seeing 37% of the betting action to Big Browns 67%.

While Big Brown will see a majority of action in almost every matchup, what of the matchup bet between the other horses that are favorites?

As mentioned Colonel John has a record of 6-4-2-0 and Graded Earnings of over $700K, while Pyro has a record of 7-3-2-1 and Graded Earnings of over $1 million. The fact that Pyro is more accomplished hasnt stopped bettors from piling on Colonel John, as he is receiving a healthy majority of the action with 75% of the bets coming the way of the Colonel.

Being installed as the odds-on favorite doesnt guarantee victory at the Kentucky Derby. Last year, Curlin was the odds-on favorite at +350 but was beaten by +400 Street Sense.

Would a wager on Colonel John be in the order?

5dimes.com is celebrating the running of the Kentucky Derby by offering a 100% match bonus. Its as simple as making a deposit anytime between now and noon (EST) on Saturday, May 3rd, the day of the Derby.

                                                                      Top Sportsbooks

KENTUCKY DERBY TRIFECTA – EXACTA – WIN PLACE SHOW

Derby Day is upon us! The field for the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby is set and post positions should play a factor in the outcome. In this sub par crop Big Brown might be the best, but he has many things to overcome and will be a bad bet at 3-1. The field has a lot of value, and I advise you to try and hit a monster trifecta, as opposed to betting the favorite. Lets take a closer look at my top contenders and the plays I will be making Saturday.

Winner: Colonel John

This horse has been nothing short of sensational this year. One of the first things I notice when I look at this horse is his sire. Tiznow won the Breeders Cup Classic twice, and that race is the same distance as the Kentucky Derby. This tells me he shouldnt have trouble getting the distance. The next thing I like is his last race in which he won the Santa Anita Derby. He captured the race in a good time, and used a style very similar to that he will be using in the Kentucky Derby. Another race of his that I like is the CashCall Futurity. He didnt get a very good trip, but he still split horses and finished second.

Although he has never raced on traditional dirt, he has displayed an affinity for Churchill Downs through his workouts. NTRA.com reported the following splits:

:12, :23 1/5, :34 3/5, :46. He galloped out six furlongs in 1:11 1/5. His final quarter was in a snappy :23 1/5.

The official workout reported was 5 furlongs in 57 4/5 B. Jockey Corey Nakatani is more than capable of winning this race, though he has failed to do so yet. Colonel Johns trainer, Eoin Harty worked under Bob Baffert when the latter captured the Derby twice in a row with Silver Charm and Real Quiet. Harty knows what it takes to get the job done, and says Colonel John is showing the same signs that Silver Charm showed. The only thing that bugs me about this horse is his low Beyers. The highest Beyer Speed Figure he has ever obtained was a 95 in his last race. While certainly not a lock, I really like Colonel Johns chances to become the 134th winner of the Kentucky Derby.

Second Place: Pyro

I had a hard time making a choice between Colonel John and Pyro. The latter ended up being my choice for second, but if you dont like my pick to win there is a lot to like about this one. Not only has he ran a 100+ BSF twice, but he has a proven ability to handle traffic. Im willing to put a line through the Bluegrass because of the Polytrack. Pyro, who is a son of Pulpit, has shown he can chase good fractions and the pace will probably be above average. His post position is also an advantage because he shouldnt lose a ton of ground going into the first turn. He will provide plenty of value at 6-1.

Others: MoNBA, COurt Vision, Denis of Cork, Big Brown, Adriano

These are the horses I would use with Colonel John and Pyro in my exotics. MoNBA looked great winning the Bluegrass and has plenty of experience. COurt Vision is a question mark in this race. He will race with blinkers for the first time, and while he appeared to be very skilled at 2, his races this year have been lackluster. Garrett Gomez staying on the horse is very encOuraging. Denis of Cork has the benefit of Calvin Borel, who won this race last year with Street Sense. His Illinois Derby was a tragedy, but his win in the Southwest and his works on the track put him in contention. Big Brown may be able to win, but I think he is more likely to run second, third, or not at all. I like the way Adriano won the Lane End under wraps, and the fact that Edgar Prado chose him over MoNBA and Tale of Ekati.

Betting the Kentucky Derby on $100:

$10 ($20 total) Kentucky Oaks/Kentucky Derby Double: Pure Clan/Colonel John, Pyro

$1 Trifecta ($40 total): Colonel John, Pyro/Colonel John, Pyro, Big Brown, MoNBA, COurt Vision/Colonel John, Pyro, Big Brown, MoNBA, COurt Vision, Denis of Cork, Adriano

$5 Exacta ($20 total): Colonel John/Pyro, COurt Vision, MoNBA, Big Brown

$6 Win-Place-Show ($18 total): Colonel John

$2 Long shot Win: COurt Vision

TRIPLE CROWN WINNERS

Triple Crown winners are a rare breed. There have only been 11 of them since they started calling the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont races the “Triple Crown” back in the early 1930’s. Many have come close, winning the Derby and Preakness, but only 11 have completed the task which shows you just how difficult it is.

The sport of horse racing desperately needs a Triple Crown winner. The sport has been on the decline for many years and the Barbaro tragedy a couple of years ago, and now Eight Belles going down in the Derby haven’t helped matters. That’s not the way to draw in a new generation of fans.

Back in 1977, as a twelve year old kid, I watched Seattle Slew win all 3 legs of the Triple Crown, and I was hooked. The very next year I watched Affirmed out duel Alydar to win the Triple Crown. Heck, I thought Triple Crown winners were common! Something that happened every few years. Those just a few years older than me must have figured the same as it was 1973 that the world watched Secretariat roar down the stretch in the Belmont. Three Triple Crown winners in the span of 5 years. Horse racing was at it’s peak.

Little did I realize how rare Triple Crown winners were. I didn’t realize, back in 77, that the last horse to win the Triple Crown prior to Secretariat was Citation back in 1948, a span of 25 years. Now here we are in 2013 and it’s been 30+ years since Alydar.

But once again, as has been the case many times over the years, there’s hope. Each year as the calendar turns to May there’s hope and anticipation that this will be the year. There’s been some big names. Some famous horses that most people remember, that have won the first two legs of the Triple Crown but failed in the Belmont. Names like Spectacular Bid, Sunday Silence, and recently Funny Cide and Smarty Jones.

It’s so difficult because were asking these horses to run in 3 races in a time span of just 5 weeks at distances they have never run before. Which makes the Belmont Stakes, the longest of the tree races, the most difficult and is why great horses like Pleasant Colony and Silver Charm come up just short.

True fans never give up hope. I’ll be sitting there as always this year, watching the Kentucky Derby and then the Preakness and rooting for a Triple Crown winner regardless of who I bet on in the races. If someone can pull it off , he or she will be able to reach whole new generation of fans that horse racing so desperately needs. Lots of pressure for a 3 year old, but pressure these beautiful animals can handle with ease.

                                                                      Top Sportsbooks

BIG BROWN FAVORED TO WIN PREAKNESS STAKES

PIMLICO, MAY 17, 2008

It should come as no surprise that Big Brown, the horse that just won the Kentucky Derby, is favored to win the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico on May 17th. Most Kentucky Derby winners are favored to win the Preakness. But perhaps Big Brown is even more deserving than past Preakness favorites. The unbeaten Big Brown proved quite a few people wrong on in the Derby. Many so called experts were not buying into Big Brown. They felt he was untested. They felt there were two many horses and variables in the Derby. They felt that the post position would hurt him. None of that mattered as the Derby favorite turned in a dominating performance.

But the Preakness won’t be a walk in the park. As a matter of fact, his trainer Rick Dutrow, who was so extremely confident heading into the Derby, is already quoted as saying “His next race is out of my hands because it’s coming in two weeks,” “The timing is not good for me. I love training a horse for a race, but I’m not going to have a chance to train him. I’m just going to kind of play around with him.”

And so, the drama begins. For the next two weeks we’ll experience a build up not unlike the Super Bowl. We’ll hear all the comparisons to Secretariat and other Triple Crown winners from yesteryear. We’ll hear from Rick Dutrow as he downplays his chances. We’ll hear from all the horse racing experts who will tell us why Big Brown is “great”, and we’ll hear from just as many experts who will tell us why he isn’t. All of which will mean nothing. They still have to run the race.

Run the race they will. May 17th, just as they do every year on the 3rd Saturday in May, they’ll run the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico and we’ll all tune in and watch on the edge of Our seats as this yearly drama plays out hoping the Derby winner can win this race and give us three more weeks of build up and speculation as we head to the Belmont.

TRIPLE CROWN ODDS

May 2009

Each year for the past 31 years, excitement builds after the running of the Kentucky Derby, and Odds are set on whether or not their will be a Triple Crown winner. This year is no exception. Currently the Odds on whether or not Mine that Bird will win the Triple Crown are 13/1. Or you can bet the field, and bet against their being a Triple Crown winner, in which case you would have to LAY 21/1 odds

You can find these Triple Crown odds, and other proposition bets related to the Preakness and Belmont at various sportsbooks including 5dimes.com and 5dimes.com.

Every year race fans get their hopes up. Every year since 1978 they have been disappointed. Past history suggests that this is not a good wager to make. If you made this wager every year for the past 30 years, you would be 0-30. Sure, eventually, some day, there will be another Triple Crown Winner. Maybe this year.

It won’t be easy though. There’s a good reason it hasn’t been done on 30 years. This is no sure thing. There are too many variables to overcome. 3 races in 5 weeks. The longest distance they’ll ever run. Fresh challengers.

BETTING ON THE MOST EXCITING TWO MINUTES IN SPORTS

Every year, the first Saturday in May, sports fans across the globe gather to watch “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports“, The Kentucky Derby. They have been running this race since 1875, the oldest continuing sports event in the United States. Sports fans have also been betting on this race since 1875.

In the last 15 years we have seen the betting volume on the Kentucky Derby increase due to the number of offshore sportsbooks ready to take your bet. You can bet the traditional win, place and show, exotics such as exactas, horse vs. horse matchups and just about every prop bet imaginable, including who will come in last!

The excitement surrounding the race, for some, is not the fact that they have a wager on the race. In many cases, the wager is secondary. A token if you will. Rather, the excitement comes from the process leading up to the race. The handicapping process.

For many, that process starts several months beforehand, with all the Kentucky Derby prep races. For others, it’s process that may only start the day before, or even the day of the race. Either way, the excitement comes from the process of handicapping the race, and then tuning in to watch and see if you’re right. Many folks pOur over racing forms, post positions, speed ratings and other horse racing systems. They toss out some horses based on these findings and circle others. Some buy tip sheets and some probably even throw darts.

The Derby fans day is filled with anticipation unlike any other. He or she continues the handicapping process all day, figuring out last minute exotic wagers and long shot picks. The television coverage on Derby day starts early. ESPN carries the undercard, all the while profiling Derby contenders. Then the network, NBC picks up coverage, which this year, is extended to a full 2.5 hOurs. During that 2.5 hOur stretch, we hear all the stories. The horse that almost didn’t make it. The horse that was bought for pennies on the dollar. The horse owned by some little old lady. There’s drama for sure. Which only enhances what’s about to come.

During the “preGame” if you will, we’ll also hear from all the so called experts who will weigh in with their Derby selections. We’ll get constant updates on the odds as they shift all day long. We’ll get interviews with the likes of Nick Zito and Todd Pletcher. By Post Time we’ll have had Our fill of Kentucky Derby build up. We’ll know everything there is about every horse in the race, which, of course, makes it all the mote exciting. Not unlike the Superbowl.

After all the build up, all the hype, there’s nothing quite like the buglers call to post. Or is it a trumpet? At any rate, right after that we hear the first few notes of “My Old Kentucky Home” and well, folks, there’s really nothing quite like it in all of sports. That is followed by the post parade as the horses take the track and make their way to the starting gate. This can be compared to a ring entrance in a big heavyweight title fight!

We wait as the last horse is ushered into the gate and then BAM! the gate opens and the race is underway. For the next 2 minutes we are on the edge of Our seats, whereever that may be, as we watch the race unfold. All the speculation, all the anticipation, all the predictions unfold before Our eyes in a matter 2 minutes time. At which time, we are either the hero, telling anyone who will listen that we had the winner. That we told you so. Or, we’re sitting their scratching Our head wondering how the heck that just happened. Didn’t see that coming!

Either way, it’s an event unlike any other. One that this writer has looked forward to year after year since he was 11 years old and watched Seattle Slew win the Derby and the Triple Crown. Somewhere out there, there’s an 11 year old kid who will watch the Kentucky Derby this year, and will embark on a lifetime of anticipation for that first Saturday in May. It truly is the Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports!
