KENTUCKY DERBY MATCH UPS AND PROP BETS
2008
There are lots of different ways to bet on the
Kentucky Derby. There's the traditional win, place
and show wagers, the prop bets, the exotics such as
exactas and trifectas, and then our favorite, the
head to head matchups. Here, the sportsbooks and
racebooks simply pit two horses against each other
and put a moneyline on each one. Similar to a boxing
match.
For example,
sportsbook.com lists Big Brown
-220 over underdog Pyro who is +170. The beauty of
this type of wager is that your horse doesn't have
to win the race. He simply has to beat the horse he
or she is matched up against. There are several
sportsbooks with matchups posted and the lines can
differ from book to book. You may even find some
that differ enough to give you a guaranteed win by
scalping. Also known as arbitrage. For example, take
+155 on the underdog and lay -150 on the favorite.
Prop bets are also offered by most sportsbooks.
For example, will there be a Triple Crown winner
this year? If you want to bet yes, you wager $100 to
win $500. If you say no, you lay $900 to win $100.
Or how about, WIll the Kentucky Derby winner
also win the preakness? Yes is +180 while No is
-240. Or Will the Derby winner also win the Belmont?
Yes is +400 while no is -600.
So if you like action, and like the Kentucky
Derby, there are enough wagers to keep you busy all
day long. You can even wager on all the preliminary
races leading up to the Derby, most of which will be
broadcast on either ESPN or NBC.
