Memphis vs.
Southern Miss

Once again there is no team hotter than the Memphis Tigers in
Conference USA. Coach John Calipari has his Tigers playing
unbelievable basketball as of late as they come into their head to
head match up with Southern Mississippi winning 15 straight games
and having an undefeated record in conference play.
The Tigers may not be the championship caliber team they were last
year with Derrick Rose running the point, but they are definitely a
team not to be overlooked this season in college basketball.
Memphis may have not played top tier talent this season like teams
in the Big East or the ACC have, but they have still had some pretty
big wins over tough teams so far this season. With their recent win
over number 19th ranked Gonzaga the Tigers proved they can still
play with the best in the country. Gonzaga may not be a North
Carolina or a UConn caliber squad, but they have been pretty good
this season.
The win over Gonzaga was huge and the Tigers have kept up their
winning ways since that victory by absolutely destroying Tulsa by 23
points.
The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles will be coming into this game
against the number 8 ranked Memphis Tigers with four straight losses
to teams that aren’t that good at all. This has not been a season to
remember by any means for the Golden Eagles as they are just above
.500 with 13-10 record and nasty record of 3-6 in conference play.

The Tigers have it pretty easy this season as there is absolutely no
team in the conference that can touch them as they sit atop
Conference USA. With a perfect 9-0 conference record the Tigers
should just run away with the conference title as they head into
another NCAA tournament with good position to make something happen.
I don’t know if they can make it all the way to the NCAA
championship game like they did last season, but they could
definitely make some waves in the biggest tournament in college
basketball come March.
Unless an absolute miracle happens for the Golden Eagles I see no
way they can pull off the upset over a Tigers team that has just
been destroying any team that stands in their way.
The only thing that Southern Miss has going for them is the fact
they can play Memphis at home. With the Golden Eagles headed to
another disappointing season in Conference USA the only bright spot
of the season has been how well they have played at home. Their road
record is just plain ugly with only one win in seven games on the
road, but they have only dropped three games at home out of the 11
they have played this season.
It is a stretch, but if the home crowd plays a factor there is a
slight possibility there will be an upset, but it is very doubtful.
Look for Memphis to roll to their 16th straight victory as they
should beat Southern Miss convincingly.
