Schedule and Odds

After finishing with a disappointing Four wins (two in Big 12 play) in 2013, the Horned Frogs will be looking to get back into the Conference race along with a bowl bid. With the hopes of an improved offense, and already a stocked defense, there’s no reason TCU can’t get to at least six wins.

The offense brings in a couple new coordinators and a more up-tempo, no-huddle scheme. Quarterback is the biggest question, but it looks like Texas A&M transfer Matt Joeckel will be the opening day starter, although nothing is set in stone. He’ll be throwing to mostly unproven receivers in David Porter, Josh Doctson and former QB Trevone Boykin. The good news is that the running Game is ready to roll. B.J. Catalon and Aaron Green are two speedy guys with experience that can both excel in a new offense.

The line loses a couple starters, but they brought in plenty of new faces and should be a deeper unit than a season ago. If the running Game succeeds, that will take off pressure from Joeckel, in turn making this group better than a year ago, which shouldn’t be all that hard.

Things are much simpler for the defense where they return nine starters and one of the non-returnees is end Devonte Fields, who was injured for most of last season. The Horned Frogs finished as one of the best Big 12 defenses last year and are only really losing their top cornerback. They have seniors, experience and quality at every position and should be able to keep this team in every Game no matter what the offense does.

TCU will get a good non-Conference test against Minnesota in their second Game. The two teams are very similar, in terms of having solid defenses and running Games. A win for the Horned Frogs would be huge and could propel them to a 3-0 record.

That should at least give them some confidence going into the Big 12 Schedule, but they’ll have their hands full no matter what with Oklahoma, Baylor, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech all on October’s Schedule.

Things will ease up a bit, but the Horned Frogs will need some road wins to better last year’s record, and that includes Games at West Virginia and Kansas. But still, it wouldn’t be surprising if this team could pull out a win against OK State or Texas Tech at home.

Six wins is definitely a possibility for this squad, or even more if Joeckel can figure things out quickly enough. Four wins is probably the bare minimum for TCU, but because of their defense, that should be attainable. We’ll get a good read on the offense after that Minnesota Game.
