Florida State will host Georgia Tech on Saturday, September 12th, to kick off the 2020 college football season for both teams. The Seminoles opened as 11 point favorites and have been bet up to -12.5 in spots.
Not surprisingly, the majority of the betting action on this game has come in on the Noles. The current total is 54.5.
Tough Spot for Tech
Georgia Tech finds itself in a difficult spot once again this season. Head coach Geoff Collins took over last year and converted an offense recruited to run the option. This takes time.
The Tech offense will be better this year. They started to show improvement towards the end of last season. But make no mistake, this is a long term project.
FSU Mediocre in 2019
Florida State was a mediocre football team in 2019. The only team they beat that had a winning record was Louisville. They were only able to extend a margin in their 6 wins against NC State and Syracuse.
While the Seminoles return plenty of talent, they also introduce a new coaching staff. When new coaches take over, that means new schemes to learn and that can take time.
That can take time when things are normal. Meaning, when teams can work through the spring and summer and then perhaps play a cupcake or two to get the kinks out early in the season.
But this is COVID-19 football. That much needed prep time has been non existent. Don’t expect a drastic improvement right out of the gate.
The Georgia Tech defense figures to show significant improvement in 2020. This unit has the ability to keep Tech in games. While their offense is a work in progress, there should be no question they’ll be better this year than last.
Had this game been played a year ago, our model would have had the Noles on top by around 17 points.
The feeling here is that both defenses figure to show the most improvement early on and as a result, we’re going to go UNDER the total of 54.5 in a game that has the potential to be closer and more entertaining than many think.
