MADISON SQUARE GARDEN

It's hard to imagine anyone's picks for the winner of the 2008 Big East Tournament not being one of the four top teams. Georgetown, Louisville, UCONN and Notre Dame. Once you get past those 4, there's not much left in the way of a dark horse. You want to throw Marquette in there? They did knock of Notre Dame in January and played them tight in early February, but they were also soundly beaten by Connecticut and by Louisville twice.

Perhaps we can throw Notre Dame out of the Big East Tourney as well. They split home games with UCONN and lost by 5 at Louisville but Georgetown destroyed Notre Dame by 20 points back in January.

Connecticut would seem to be the likely of all picks to knock off either Georgetown or Louisville and claim the Big East Championship. UCONN, 23-6,  beat Louisville in Connecticut the end of January and lost by just 3 at Georgetown. They are hot down the stretch, 6-1 their last 7 games as of March 3rd, and Madison Square Garden is as close to a home away from home as you can get for UCONN. They draw tremendous fan support at the Garden with it being just a short drive for many UCONN Fans. So, if looking to add a small upset to your picks, consider UCONN.

But if we're looking for hot teams down the stretch, Louisville is hotter than anyone else in the Big East. Louisville, 24-6, is 7-0 their last 7 games, 6-1 against the spread, with only their big game with Georgetown remaining on March 8th. That game against the Hoya's is on the road though, so that's one to watch.

Defending Big East Champions Georgetown won't go down without a fight. They have the best overall record of all the Big East teams at 24-4. The tourney is a 3 horse race in our opinion. Georgetown, Louisville and Connecticut and as much as we hate to play the obvious, we think Louisville is the team to beat and the team to most likely take the title away from Georgetown. We have a feeling that the Big East title game will be a match up between UCONN and Louisville.

There may not be much value in betting any of our top three picks in the big east to win the tourney. There will be more value betting on individual games in this tournament. Especially with hot pointspread teams like Marquette being 6-1 against the spread their last 7. Tournament time is always the best time of year to find live underdogs. Although keep in mind, Louisville is one of the best teams in the country against the spread as well this year, covering 60% of their games. But if you're making you're own picks against the spread, look long and hard at the underdogs. Often times the favorites are over priced this time of year.
