2008 BIG 10
BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT
MARCH 13-16
CONSECO FIELDHOUSE - INDIANAPOLIS, IN
Our Top 3 picks for the Big 10 Conference Tournament would be Wisconsin,
Purdue and Indiana. All three teams are playing with some momentum right now as
Wisconsin is 6-1 their last 7 and both Indiana and Purdue are 5-2. Purdue is 5-2
against the pointspread. What could make this interesting is that Purdue seems
to have Wisconsin's number. Purdue beat Wisconsin both times they played this
year.
Ohio State, Indiana and Michigan State all beat Purdue but did so at home.
But remember folks, we are not just looking to pick the winners of these
Conference Tournaments. We are looking to also pick pointspread winners. That is
where all the value lies when betting on these conference tournaments. In
looking for teams that may be undervalued in the Big 10, why not start with
Illinois. When the betting public looks at Illinois, they are going to see a
team that is 12-17 this year, (as of this writing on March 5th) and 4-12 in
conference play. They are not going to want to throw their money on Illinois.
However at closer look, we see that Illinois has played the 2nd toughest
schedule in the entire country this year. They played some close games with some
good teams. What this means is that we are likely to see an inflated
pointspread when Illinois takes on the upper class of the Big 10. Finding an
inflated pointspread in tournament play can translate into more winners than
losers when betting these games.
You can find pointspread value with the bad teams as well. Iowa for example
is 3-7 down the stretch but they were winners of 6 games against the pointspread
in that span. Even the worst team in the conference, Northwestern, who only won
one conference game all year and was 1-9 straight up over their last 10 games
managed 5 pointspread winners in that span. A 50/50 proposition. The best
pointspread team in the conference was Purdue this year at 16-11 ATS. The rest
of the league was a few games above or below .500. Take the top team Wisconsin
and the bottom team Northwestern. Wisconsin was 13-12 against the pointspread
while Northwestern had 10 pointspread winners and 13 pointspread losers.
Remember, many more people bet these tournament games than the regular
season. Whether online or the thousands that flock to Vegas Sportsbooks to watch
these games, the handle on these games is huge when compared to the regular
season. The public does not like to bet on bad teams. They fall in love with
teams like Wisconsin. Their handicapping usually consists of looking at the
records of the two teams. That's where you can step in and take advantage. Le
them push their money through the windows on the obvious favorites while you sit
back and take advantage of the inflated pointspreads they create!
