So far this year there is a common theme when handicapping the Conference Tournaments and trying to isolate top picks. There's a front runner, a team to beat, and then there's everyone else. Such is the case in the 2008 Conference USA Tournament. Who is going to bet against Memphis? Sure we can come up with our top 3 picks here, but seriously folks, who is going to knock off the 28-1, 14-0 in conference play Memphis Tigers? UAB? Houston? After those two teams the talent is pretty thin.

Not only is Memphis 28-1 on the year, but their non conference schedule blows away the rest of the teams in Conference USA. Memphis knocked off some good teams along the way this year. Uconn, USC, Georgetown, Arizona and Gonzaga. UAB is the only Conference opponent to come close to Memphis this year dropping a 79-78 decision at home.

As with most of the conferences, our real value in betting these tournaments will come with making picks on individual games, not picking a straight up winner for the tournament. There figures to be some nice betting opportunities in the C-USA Tourney. Taking the who's hot lately approach, as of this writing on March 4th, we see that Memphis is of course hot, going 6-1 over their last 7 games but they are just 2-5 against the spread. That tells us that the oddsmakers are making you pay the price if you want to bet on Memphis. On the flip side, look at a team like Tulsa. They are 5-2 over their last 7 games but 6-1 against the spread. Or how about Tulane. Tulane is 0-7 over their last 7 games and 1-6 against the spread.

So, yeah, Memphis will probably win this tournament. However, there will be some nice betting opportunities along the was. Odds are, Memphis won't cover every game.
