2008 PAC-10 COLLEGE BASKETBALL Tournament

MARCH 12-15

STAPLES CENTER, LOS ANGELES, CA

Most folks would name UCLA, Stanford and Washington State as their top 3 picks to win the PAC 10 Tournament. But the PAC 10 Tourney figures to have some drama this year. Of the 10 teams in the league, 5 of them are Top 25 teams according to various power ratings, with the other half of the league, with the exception of Oregon State, being Top 50 teams. So with the PAC 10 Tournament, aside from making picks on individual Games, of which there will plenty of opportunities, there will also be some value betting on teams to win the Tournament straight up. As of this writing no sportsbooks have odds posted to win the Tournament, but the PAC 10 is not a one horse race.

UCLA will be favored. They are 26-3 overall and 14-2 in conference. But the two Conference losses are what gives the other teams hope. Particularly the USC loss as USC upset UCLA at UCLA. Stanford has just 4 losses all year, however 3 of those losses came at the hands of Conference opponents UCLA, Oregon and Arizona State.

Don’t count out USC either. As mentioned they picked off UCLA at UCLA but they also played some of the best teams in the country close this year. They lost by just 4 to Kansas and lost in overtime on a neutral cOurt to Memphis. Washington State did beat them twice though, but also consider the fan base they will have at the Staples Center. Even if you go down to the bottom of the PAC 10 and look at a team like California, 15-12 overall and 6-10 in Conference play, but they have wins over Missouri, USC, Washington State at Wash St and Arizona State at Arizona State.

It should come as no surprise that of the 29 College Basketball Conferences, the PAC-10 is ranked number as the number 2 Conference overall when using the Pomeroy ratings. It’s a quality league from top to bottom which should present us with all kinds of opportunities to find some nice underdogs to bet. UCLA will be tough to beat, but they will likely be overpriced and will likely be a good team to bet against at some point. As for the rest of the league, It’s wide open. Expect upsets.
