2008 ACC
BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT
MARCH 13-16
CHARLOTTE, NC
The obvious top two picks for the ACC Basketball tournament would be Duke and
defending Champion North Carolina. Duke is 25-3 as of this writing on March 4th,
and 14-2 in the conference. The Tar Heels are 27-2 overall and also 14-2 in the
conference. But we give the edge to Duke here. They played a tougher overall
schedule than North Carolina and, perhaps most importantly, they beat North
Carolina at North Carolina by 10 points.
Once you get by North Carolina and Duke, it's a wide open field. The ACC is
the 3rd strongest College basketball conference according to the Pomeroy
Ratings, with any of the remaining teams capable of beating each other.
So with the parity in the league, outside of Duke and North Carolina, we look
to find a team that perhaps is getting on a roll and building some momentum at
just the right time to possibly make some noise in this tournament. How about
the Miami Hurricanes? Miami has won 5 of their last 6 games and is 4-1 against
the spread their last 5. They also own wins over Duke and Clemson. Speaking of
Clemson, they are also heating up at the right time. They have won 6 of their
last 8 games and are 4-1 against the spread their last 5.
Looking for some teams as cold as ice? These are teams you probably won't
want to include in your tournament picks. It should come as no surprise that we
find the two coldest teams in the basement of the ACC. Boston College leads the
way going just 1-9 over their last 10 games followed by NC State who is 2-8
their last 10 both straight up and against the spread.
Let's also not forget last year. Last year saw number 10 seeded North
Carolina State make it all the way to the ACC championship game only to lose to
North Carolina 89-80.
As solid as the middle of the conference is, it wouldn't seem right if we
weren't treated to a Duke vs. North Carolina final. As of this writing, they
still have to play each other once more to close out the year on March 8. Let's
hope we get to see them on March 16th as well! Don't forget to check in with the
